बाष्प संरुद्ध कण्ठः तु वाली स आर्त रवः शनैः ।
उवाच रामम् संप्रेक्ष्य पंकलग्न इव द्विपः ॥४-१८-४९॥
bāṣpa saṃruddha kaṇṭhaḥ tu vālī sa ārta ravaḥ shanaiḥ । uvāca rāmam saṃprekṣya paṃkalagna iva dvipaḥ ॥ ॥4-18-49॥
Translation
With his throat choked by tears and making sounds of pain, Vali, looking at Rama, spoke slowly like an elephant stuck in mud.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आँसुओं से गला रुँध जाने के कारण, कीचड़ में फँसे हुए हाथी की तरह कराहते हुए, वाली ने श्रीराम की ओर देखकर धीरे-धीरे कहा।
English Commentary
This verse employs a powerful simile: Vali is compared to a mighty elephant trapped in mud ('pankalagna iva dvipah'). This illustrates the tragic fall of the Vanara king—once unstoppable, now immobilized by Rama's arrow and approaching death. The physical description of his throat being choked with tears ('bashpa samruddha kanthah') signifies immense emotional agony, blending physical pain with the sorrow of leaving his loved ones. It sets a somber tone for the specific requests he is about to make regarding his family, transitioning the narrative from political conflict to personal tragedy.

यहाँ वाली की शारीरिक और मानसिक पीड़ा का अत्यंत मार्मिक चित्रण है। 'पंकलग्न इव द्विपः' (कीचड़ में फँसे हाथी की तरह) की उपमा वाली की असहायता को दर्शाती है। जो वाली कभी इंद्र के समान पराक्रमी था, आज वह मृत्यु के दलदल में धँस रहा है। उसका गला आँसुओं (बाष्प) से रुँधा हुआ है, जो उसके पश्चाताप और पुत्र-मोह को दर्शाता है। यह श्लोक दृश्य को एक वीर रस से करुण रस में बदल देता है, जहाँ एक महान राजा अपनी अंतिम सांसें ले रहा है और अपने परिवार की चिंता में व्याकुल है।
