Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ताम् पालयति धर्मात्मा भरतः सत्यवान् ऋजुः ।
धर्म काम अर्थ तत्त्वज्ञो निग्रह अनुग्रहे रतः ॥ ॥४-१८-७॥
tām pālayati dharmātmā bharataḥ satyavān ṛjuḥ । dharma kāma artha tattvajño nigraha anugrahe rataḥ ॥ ॥4-18-7॥
Translation
That earth is currently protected by the righteous Bharata, who is truthful and straightforward. He knows the essence of Dharma, Kama, and Artha, and is devoted to dispensing punishment and reward.

(वर्तमान में) उस पृथ्वी का पालन धर्मात्मा, सत्यवान और सरल स्वभाव वाले भरत कर रहे हैं। वे धर्म, काम और अर्थ के तत्त्व को जानने वाले हैं और निग्रह-अनुग्रह में तत्पर रहते हैं।
English Commentary
Rama acknowledges the current hierarchy: Bharata is the King. Rama describes Bharata with high praise—righteous, truthful, and an expert in the Purusharthas. By invoking Bharata, Rama legitimizes his actions as those of a loyal deputy enforcing the King's peace. He implies that under Bharata’s rule, law and order extend everywhere, and he (Rama) is merely an instrument of that administration, tasked with maintaining Nigraha (order/punishment) in the wilderness.

राम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वर्तमान राजा भरत हैं। राम स्वयं को भरत का प्रतिनिधि मान रहे हैं। भरत 'धर्म काम अर्थ तत्त्वज्ञो' हैं, यानी वे जानते हैं कि कब क्या करना उचित है। राम यह संकेत दे रहे हैं कि भरत का शासन इतना व्यापक है कि अधर्म कहीं भी सहन नहीं किया जा सकता। राम का वनवास उन्हें राजधर्म से मुक्त नहीं करता; वे अभी भी राजकुल के सदस्य हैं और राजा (भरत) के आदेशों/आदर्शों को लागू करने के लिए बाध्य हैं।
