पुत्रेण मम किम् कार्यम् किम् राज्येन किम् आत्मना ।
कपि सिम्हे महा भागे तस्मिन् भर्तरि नश्यति ॥४-१९-१८॥
putreṇa mama kim kāryam kim rājyena kim ātmanā । kapi simhe mahā bhāge tasmin bhartari naśyati ॥ ॥4-19-18॥
Translation
What use have I with a son? What with a kingdom? What with my own self? When that lion among monkeys, my noble husband, is perishing.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस महाभाग कपि-सिंह (वानर राज बाली) के नष्ट (मृत) होने पर, मुझे पुत्र से क्या प्रयोजन? राज्य से क्या काम? और स्वयं अपने आप (जीवन) से भी क्या प्रयोजन?
English Commentary
Tara rejects the pragmatic advice of her subjects with rhetorical questions that underscore her despair. By asking what use she has for her son, the kingdom, or even her own life, she declares that her identity and purpose were entirely tethered to Vali. Referring to Vali as kapi simhe (lion among monkeys), she acknowledges his power and nobility despite his defeat. This verse illustrates the depth of her grief—she is not interested in survival strategies or political maneuvering. It is a moment of absolute sorrow where the material world loses all value in the face of the loss of her beloved.

यह श्लोक तारा के वैराग्य और पति-प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा है। वानर उसे राज्य और पुत्र अंगद की सुरक्षा का वास्ता दे रहे थे, लेकिन तारा के लिए पति के बिना यह सब व्यर्थ है। 'कपि सिम्हे' (वानरों में सिंह समान) और 'महा भागे' (महान भाग्य वाले) विशेषण बाली के प्रति उनके अपार आदर को दर्शाते हैं। तारा स्पष्ट करती हैं कि एक पतिव्रता स्त्री के लिए पति ही सर्वस्व है; उसके बिना पुत्र का मोह या राज्य का सुख कोई मायने नहीं रखता। यह भारतीय साहित्य में वर्णित उस आदर्श का परिचायक है जहाँ पत्नी का अस्तित्व अपने पति के साथ अभिन्न रूप से जुड़ा माना जाता है।
