Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
लक्षयस्व तयोः भावम् प्रहृष्ट मनसौ यदि ।
विश्वासयन् प्रशंसाभिः इङ्गितैः च पुनः पुनः ॥४-२-२५॥
Lakṣayasva tayoḥ bhāvam prahṛṣṭa manasau yadi |
Viśvāsayan praśaṃsābhiḥ iṅgitaiḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥4-2-25॥
Translation
Observe their disposition to see if they are of a delighted mind. Inspire confidence in them repeatedly by means of praise and gestures.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनके मनोभाव (इरादे) को लक्ष्य कीजिये (परखिये) कि क्या वे प्रसन्न मन वाले हैं। बार-बार अपनी प्रशंसात्मक बातों और चेष्टाओं से (यदि वे अच्छे लगें तो) उनमें विश्वास उत्पन्न कीजिये।
English Commentary
Sugriva outlines the rules of engagement. The primary objective is to gauge their Bhavam (attitude/intent)—specifically, whether they possess a "delighted mind" (prahrishta manasau), implying lack of malice. If they seem benign, Hanuman is to actively build rapport (vishvasayan) using praise (prashamsabhih) and friendly gestures. This shows that despite his fear, Sugriva is open to alliance if the threat is disproven. He wants to convert these potential threats into friends, but cautiously.

यह श्लोक हनुमान के मिशन का 'प्रोटोकॉल' तय करता है। सुग्रीव कहते हैं कि पहले देखो कि क्या वे 'प्रहृष्ट मनसौ' (प्रसन्न/शुद्ध मन वाले) हैं या उनके मन में कोई द्वेष है। यदि वे सौम्य प्रतीत हों, तो 'विश्वासयन्' (विश्वास दिलाना/जीतना) अगला कदम होना चाहिए। यह विश्वास 'प्रशंसाभिः' (मीठी बातों/स्तुति) और उचित व्यवहार से जीता जाना चाहिए। सुग्रीव यहाँ कूटनीति सिखा रहे हैं—पहले निरीक्षण करो, फिर यदि सुरक्षित लगे, तो संबंध बनाओ। यह निर्देश बाद में हनुमान और राम के बीच होने वाले प्रसिद्ध संवाद की नींव रखता है।
