मम एव अभिमुखम् स्थित्वा पृच्छ त्वम् हरि पुंगव ।
प्रयोजनम् प्रवेशस्य वनस्य अस्य धनुर् धरौ ॥४-२-२६॥
Mama eva abhimukham sthitvā pṛccha tvam hari puṃgava |
Prayojanam praveśasya vanasya asya dhanur dharau ॥4-2-26॥
Translation
O Bull among Monkeys! Positioning yourself favorably towards me [taking my side/keeping my interests in mind], ask those two bowmen the purpose of their entry into this forest.

हे हरिपुंगव! (उनसे बात करते समय) मेरे ही अनुकूल (मेरे पक्ष में) स्थित होकर, उन दोनों धनुर्धारियों से इस वन में प्रवेश करने का प्रयोजन (उद्देश्य) पूछिये।
English Commentary
Sugriva’s final command underscores the delicate nature of the mission. He instructs Hanuman to ask the Dhanur dharau (two bowmen) their purpose (prayojanam) for entering the forest. The phrase Mama eva abhimukham sthitwa is significant. While literally "standing facing me," in this context of sending an envoy, it implies "standing with your orientation towards me" (i.e., representing my interests solely, or steering them towards me if they are friends). Sugriva wants Hanuman to be his agent through and through, ensuring that any information gathered serves Sugriva's safety. This concludes the prelude to the historic meeting.

यह सुग्रीव का अंतिम निर्देश है। 'मम एव अभिमुखम् स्थित्वा' का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'मेरे ही सम्मुख स्थित होकर', किन्तु संदर्भानुसार इसका अर्थ है 'मेरा ही पक्ष लेते हुए' या 'मेरी ओर मुख करके (अर्थात मुझे स्वामी मानकर)' उनसे बात करना। सुग्रीव चाहते हैं कि हनुमान बातों-बातों में यह पता लगाएँ कि वे यहाँ क्यों आए हैं ('प्रयोजनम् प्रवेशस्य'), लेकिन यह सब करते समय हनुमान की निष्ठा सुग्रीव के प्रति ही होनी चाहिए। वे यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहते हैं कि हनुमान कहीं उन तेजस्वी वीरों के प्रभाव में आकर सुग्रीव को भूल न जाएँ।
