शुद्ध आत्मानौ यदि एतौ जानीहि त्वम् प्लवंगम ।
व्याभाषितैः वा रूपैः वा विज्ञेया दुष्टता अनयोः ॥ ॥४-२-२७॥
Śuddha ātmānau yadi etau jānīhi tvam plavaṃgama । Vyābhāṣitaiḥ vā rūpaiḥ vā vijñeyā duṣṭatā anayoḥ ॥ ॥4-2-27॥
Translation
O Plavangama (Hanuman)! Ascertain if these two possess pure hearts. Their malicious intent, if any, can be known through their conversation or their physical appearance (body language).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे प्लवंगम (हनुमान)! तुम यह पता लगाओ कि क्या ये दोनों शुद्ध हृदय वाले हैं। उनकी बातचीत (संकेतों) अथवा उनके रूप (चेष्टाओं) से यह ज्ञात हो जाएगा कि उनके मन में कोई दुष्टता तो नहीं है।
English Commentary
Sugriva’s instruction here is a masterclass in caution and statecraft. Driven by the fear that these warriors might be agents of his brother Bali, he instructs Hanuman to analyze them psychologically before revealing his identity. The verse emphasizes that internal intent—whether pure or malicious—manifests externally through Vyabhashita (speech patterns) and Rupa (body language). Sugriva trusts Hanuman not just as a messenger, but as an analyst who can pierce through disguises to read the true character of the strangers. It sets the stage for Hanuman’s role as the ultimate diplomat.
