तथा तु तारा करुणम् रुदंती भर्तुः समीपे सह वानरीभिः ।
व्यवस्यत प्रायम् अनिन्द्य वर्णा उपोपवेष्टुम् भुवि यत्र वाली ॥ ॥४-२०-२६॥
tathā tu tārā karuṇam rudantī bhartuḥ samīpe saha vānarībhiḥ । vyavasyata prāyam anindya varṇā upopaveṣṭum bhuvi yatra vālī ॥ ॥4-20-26॥
Translation
Thus crying piteously, Tara, of flawless complexion, along with the other female monkeys, resolved to sit in fasting (unto death) on the ground near her husband where Vali lay.

इस प्रकार करुण क्रंदन करती हुई, अनिंद्य वर्ण वाली तारा ने वानरियों के साथ अपने पति के समीप, जहाँ वाली पड़े थे, भूमि पर उपवास (प्रायोपवेश - मृत्यु तक अनशन) करने का निश्चय किया।
English Commentary
This marks the climax of Tara's grief. The phrase vyavasyata prayam indicates she resolved to undertake Prayopavesha—fasting unto death. She has given up the will to live. The descriptor anindya varna (of flawless complexion/beauty) contrasts her royal status and beauty with her current resolve to sit in the dust and die. This desperate situation sets the stage for Hanuman’s intervention in the next sarga; if Tara were to die, the stability of Kishkindha and the survival of Angada would be in grave peril.

यहाँ तारा के शोक की पराकाष्ठा है। 'व्यवस्यत प्रायम्' का अर्थ है कि उन्होंने 'प्रायोपवेश' का निर्णय लिया—जो मृत्यु तक भोजन-जल त्याग कर देह त्यागने की प्रक्रिया है। वह जीवन की आशा छोड़ चुकी हैं। 'अनिंद्य वर्णा' (दोषरहित रंग/सौंदर्य वाली) विशेषण का प्रयोग करके कवि यह बताते हैं कि इतनी रूपवती और सुख-सुविधाओं के योग्य रानी अब धूल में बैठकर प्राण त्यागने को तत्पर है। यह स्थिति हनुमान जी के हस्तक्षेप के लिए पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करती है, क्योंकि यदि तारा प्राण त्याग देतीं, तो किष्किन्धा का भविष्य और भी अंधकारमय हो जाता।
