त्वम् अपि अस्य पिता दाता च परित्राता च सर्वतः ।
भयेषु अभयदः चैव यथा अहम् प्लवगेश्वर ॥ ॥४-२२-१०॥
tvam api asya pitā dātā ca paritrātā ca sarvataḥ । bhayeṣu abhayadaḥ caiva yathā aham plavageśvara ॥ ॥4-22-10॥
Translation
You too become his father, provider, protector from all sides, and giver of fearlessness in times of danger, just as I was, O Lord of Monkeys.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वानरेश्वर! जैसे मैं था, वैसे ही अब तुम इसके पिता, दाता (पोषणकर्ता), रक्षक और भय के समय अभय देने वाले बनो।
English Commentary
Vali formally assigns the role of 'father' to Sugriva. In the tradition of the joint family, the uncle (pitrivya) is equivalent to the father. Vali lists Sugriva's new responsibilities: data (provider of resources), paritrata (physical protector), and abhayadah (giver of emotional security/fearlessness). This imposes a heavy moral obligation on Sugriva to completely fill the void left by Vali in Angada's life.
