यथा हि त्वम् महाबाहो लालितः सततम् मया ।
न तथा वर्तमानम् त्वाम् सुग्रीवो बहु मन्यते ॥ ॥४-२२-२१॥
Yathā hi tvam mahābāho lālitaḥ satatam mayā । Na tathā vartamānam tvām sugrīvo bahu manyate ॥ ॥4-22-21॥
Translation
O mighty-armed one, just as you were constantly pampered by me, Sugriva will not regard you highly if you continue to behave in that same manner.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाबाहु! जिस प्रकार मैंने तुम्हें सदा लाड़-प्यार से रखा है, यदि तुम (वैसा ही अड़ियल) व्यवहार अब भी करोगे, तो सुग्रीव तुम्हारा अधिक सम्मान नहीं करेंगे।
English Commentary
Wali provides a harsh reality check to his son. He acknowledges that he has "lalitah" (pampered/cherished) Angada constantly. However, expecting the same indulgence from Sugriva would be a dangerous mistake. If Angada behaves with the entitlement of a spoiled prince ("tatha vartamanam" - behaving in that same way), Sugriva will not value him. Wali warns that the dynamics have changed; familial love from a father allows for leniency, but the relationship with a King-Uncle requires discipline. Angada must shed his entitlement to survive and prosper in the new administration.

बालि अपने पुत्र को कठोर वास्तविकता से परिचित करा रहे हैं। एक पिता के रूप में बालि ने अंगद के हर हठ और इच्छा को पूरा किया (लालितः), लेकिन चाचा सुग्रीव वैसा नहीं करेंगे। यदि अंगद ने सुग्रीव के शासन में भी वही पुराना, लाड़ला और जिद्दी रवैया अपनाया, तो सुग्रीव उसका आदर ('बहु मन्यते') नहीं करेंगे, बल्कि उसे एक बाधा मानेंगे। बालि अंगद को समझा रहे हैं कि लाड़-प्यार का समय समाप्त हो चुका है। अब उसे अपनी योग्यता और विनम्रता से सम्मान अर्जित करना होगा। यह एक पिता द्वारा दी गई कड़वी लेकिन जीवन रक्षक सीख है कि सत्ता बदलने पर व्यवहार भी बदलना अनिवार्य है।
