इति उक्त्वा अथ विवृत्त अक्षः शर संपीडितो भृशम् ।
विवृतैः दशनैः भीमैः बभूव उत्क्रान्त जीवितः ॥ ॥४-२२-२४॥
Iti uktvā atha vivṛtta akṣaḥ śara saṃpīḍito bhṛśam । Vivṛtaiḥ daśanaiḥ bhīmaiḥ babhūva utkrānta jīvitaḥ ॥ ॥4-22-24॥
Translation
Having spoken thus, his eyes rolled back, severely tormented by the arrow. With terrifying teeth bared, his life force departed.

ऐसा कहकर, बाण की पीड़ा से अत्यंत व्यथित बालि की आँखें पथरा गईं (घूम गईं)। भयानक दाँत खुल गए और उनके प्राण पखेरू उड़ गए।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the physical reality of death immediately following Wali's final words of wisdom. The spiritual composure he maintained to advise Angada collapses under the physical trauma of Rama’s arrow ("shara sampidito"). The imagery is graphic and raw: his eyes roll back ("vivritta akshah") and his mouth falls open revealing terrifying teeth ("dashanaih bhimaih"). This is not a sanitized passing; it represents the agony of a warrior dying from a mortal wound. The transition from the articulate, wise king of the previous verses to a lifeless corpse ("utkranta jivitah") is sudden and shocking, marking the end of the Wali era.

यह बालि के अंत का क्षण है। अपने कर्तव्यों को पूरा करने के बाद, शारीरिक पीड़ा उन पर हावी हो जाती है। 'शर संपीडितो' (बाण से पीड़ित) अवस्था में उनकी मृत्यु होती है। वाल्मीकि ने मृत्यु का यथार्थवादी और भयानक चित्रण किया है—आँखें उलट जाना ('विवृत्त अक्षः') और दाँत बाहर निकल आना ('विवृतैः दशनैः')। यह दृश्य वानरों के लिए अत्यंत क्लेशदायक है, क्योंकि उनका अजेय राजा अब एक निर्जीव शरीर मात्र रह गया है। 'उत्क्रान्त जीवितः' का अर्थ है जीवन का शरीर से बाहर निकल जाना। यहाँ एक वीर योद्धा की दुखद और दर्दनाक मृत्यु का वर्णन है।
