युगपद् विहितम् तात न मन्ये सुखम् अवयोः ।
सौहार्दम् भ्रातृ युक्तम् हि तद् इदम् जातम् अन्यथा ॥ ॥४-२२-४॥
yugapad vihitam tāta na manye sukham avayoḥ । sauhārdam bhrātṛ yuktam hi tad idam jātam anyathā ॥ ॥4-22-4॥
Translation
O dear brother! I think that happiness was not ordained for both of us simultaneously. The brotherly affection that should have existed between us turned into this (enmity).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे तात! मैं मानता हूँ कि हम दोनों का एक साथ सुखी रहना (भाग्य में) नहीं लिखा था। जो हमारा भ्रातृ-सुलभ सौहार्द (प्रेम) होना चाहिए था, वह अन्यथा (वैर) हो गया।
English Commentary
This is a deeply poignant admission. Vali reflects that destiny did not ordain yugapad sukham (simultaneous happiness) for both brothers—one's rise required the other's fall. He laments that what should have been brotherly solidarity (sauhardam) twisted into enmity (anyatha). This encapsulates the eternal tragedy of power struggles between kin. By calling Sugriva Tata (dear one), Vali shows that at death's door, the political rivalry has dissolved, leaving only the original fraternal bond.

यह एक अत्यंत मार्मिक स्वीकारोक्ति है। वाली कहते हैं कि नियति को यह मंजूर नहीं था कि दोनों भाई एक साथ सुखी रहें—एक का सुख दूसरे के दुःख (या मृत्यु) पर निर्भर हो गया। 'तद् इदम् जातम् अन्यथा'—जो प्रेम होना चाहिए था, वह वैर बन गया। यह भाई-भाई के बीच सत्ता संघर्ष की चिरंतन त्रासदी है। वाली अब सुग्रीव को 'तात' (प्यारे भाई) कह रहे हैं, जो यह दर्शाता है कि मृत्यु के द्वार पर उनका पुराना प्रेम लौट आया है।
