Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अस्त मस्तक संरुद्धो रश्मिः दिनकरात् इव ।
पेतुः क्षतज धाराः तु व्रणेभ्यः तस्य सर्वशः ॥ ॥४-२३-१९॥
Asta mastaka saṃruddho raśmiḥ dinakarāt iva । Petuḥ kṣataja dhārāḥ tu vraṇebhyaḥ tasya sarvaśaḥ ॥ ॥4-23-19॥
Translation
Like rays [streaming] from the sun obstructed by the peak of the sunset mountain, streams of blood fell from his wounds on all sides.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे अस्ताचल (सूर्यास्त के पर्वत) की चोटी से सूर्य की (अंतिम) किरणें निकलती हैं, वैसे ही उनके घावों से चारों ओर रक्त की धाराएं बहने लगीं।
English Commentary
The imagery continues with a majestic comparison. Vali is the setting sun. As the arrow (the obstruction) is removed, blood gushes out like the final red rays of the sun peeking over the western mountain ("Asta mastaka"). The commentary elucidates the symbolism: the "Sun" of the Vanara kingdom is setting. The "Kshataja dharah" (streams of blood) are equated to light rays, granting a solemn dignity to the gory scene. It signifies the end of an era and the fading of Vali's brilliance into the darkness of death.

बाण निकालते ही रक्त का प्रवाह तेज हो गया। कवि ने वाली की तुलना डूबते हुए सूर्य ('दिनकरात्') से की है। जैसे डूबते सूर्य की लाल किरणें पर्वत के शिखर से फूटती हैं, वैसे ही वाली के शरीर से रक्त की धाराएं ('क्षतज धाराः') बह रही हैं। यह उपमा अत्यंत गंभीर है—वाली का जीवन 'सूर्यास्त' की तरह समाप्त हो रहा है। वह वानर समाज के सूर्य थे जो अब अस्त हो रहे हैं, और उनका रक्त अंतिम किरणों के रूप में बिखर रहा है। यह दृश्य भव्यता और करुणा का मिश्रण है।
