या दत्ता देव राजेन तव तुष्टेन संयुगे ।
शात कौम्भीम् प्रियाम् मालाम् ताम् ते पश्यामि न इह किम् ॥ ॥४-२३-२८॥
yā dattā deva rājena tava tuṣṭena saṃyuge । śāta kaumbhīm priyām mālām tām te paśyāmi na iha kim ॥ ॥4-23-28॥
Translation
"That beloved golden necklace given to you by the King of Gods (Indra), pleased in battle—why do I not see it here [shining as before]?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"युद्ध में प्रसन्न होकर देवराज (इन्द्र) ने आपको जो सोने की प्रिय माला दी थी, उसे मैं यहाँ (आपके कंठ में उस शोभा के साथ) क्यों नहीं देख पा रही हूँ?" (भाव यह है कि माला तो है, पर वह अब प्राणों की रक्षा नहीं कर सकी)।
English Commentary
Tara refers to the celestial golden necklace given to Vali by his father, Indra. This necklace was the source of Vali's invincibility and legendary strength. By asking "Why do I not see it here?", Tara is likely lamenting that despite the necklace's presence, its power has failed to protect him against Rama's arrow. It signifies the failure of divine boons against the will of supreme destiny (or Rama's divinity). The necklace, once a symbol of life and victory, now adorns a corpse. It highlights the futility of material or even celestial protections when one's time has come. The "beloved" necklace has lost its meaning because the life it was meant to guard is gone.

तारा का ध्यान अब उस प्रसिद्ध 'इन्द्रमाला' (कांचन माला) की ओर जाता है। यह माला वाली की अजेयता का प्रतीक थी। किंवदंती के अनुसार, जब तक यह माला वाली के गले में थी, उसके प्राण नहीं लिए जा सकते थे या उसकी आधी शक्ति नहीं घटती थी। तारा का प्रश्न "न पश्यामि" (मैं नहीं देख रही) एक अलंकारिक प्रश्न है। माला शरीर पर है, लेकिन उसका 'प्रभाव' लुप्त हो गया है। या शायद खून और धूल के कारण उसकी चमक फीकी पड़ गई है। यह प्रश्न भाग्य की विडंबना को दर्शाता है—देवताओं का दिया हुआ वरदान (माला) भी समय आने पर, और राम जैसे अवतारी पुरुष के सामने, निष्फल हो जाता है। वह उस सुरक्षा कवच को ढूंढ रही है जिसने आज धोखा दे दिया।
