तम् आशु वेगेन दुरासदेन तु अभिप्लुताम् शोक महार्णवेन ।
पश्यन् तदा वालि अनुजः तरस्वी भ्रात्रुः वधेन अप्रतिमेन तेपे ॥ ॥४-२४-१॥
tam āśu vegena durāsadena tu abhiplutām śoka mahārṇavena । paśyan tadā vāli anujaḥ tarasvī bhrātruḥ vadhena apratimena tepe ॥ ॥4-24-1॥
Translation
Seeing her (Tara) submerged in a mighty ocean of grief with an unbearable swiftness, the swift younger brother of Vali (Sugriva) was then scorched by regret over the peerless killing of his brother.

उस समय, वेगवान और अजेय शोक रूपी महासागर में डूबी हुई तारा को देखकर, वाली के छोटे भाई (सुग्रीव) को अपने भाई के उस अनुपम (अतुलनीय) वध के कारण गहरा संताप (पश्चाताप) हुआ।
English Commentary
This verse marks the beginning of Sarga 24 and shifts the focus to Sugriva's reaction. Witnessing Tara "submerged in the ocean of grief," Sugriva is struck by immediate remorse. The victory he craved suddenly tastes like ash. The word 'tepe' (heated/scorched) describes his mental state—he is burning with guilt. The sight of the grieving widow humanizes the enemy he just destroyed. It highlights the complex relationship between the brothers; despite the enmity, the bond of blood and the tragedy of fratricide ('bhrātruḥ vadhena') weigh heavily on him. Sugriva realizes that his political gain is built on a foundation of immense personal loss and suffering.

यहाँ से दृश्य और मनोदशा में परिवर्तन होता है। अभी तक ध्यान तारा के विलाप पर था, अब कैमरा सुग्रीव की ओर मुड़ता है। 'शोक महार्णवेन' (शोक के महासागर) में डूबी तारा को देखकर सुग्रीव की जीत का नशा उतर जाता है। 'भ्रात्रुः वधेन... तेपे'—भाई के वध से वह तप गया (जल गया)। यह पश्चाताप की अग्नि है। सुग्रीव, जो कुछ क्षण पहले राज्य के लिए लड़ रहा था, अब अपनी भाभी के दुख को देखकर टूट गया है। यह वाल्मीकि की मनोवैज्ञानिक पकड़ है—जीत मिलने के बाद अक्सर मनुष्य को उस जीत की कीमत का असली अहसास होता है। 'अप्रतिम वध' का अर्थ है ऐसा वध जो साधारण नहीं था, जिसने सुग्रीव की आत्मा को झकझोर दिया।
