स बाष्प पूर्णेन मुखेन् पश्यन् क्षणेन निर्विण्ण मना मनस्वी ।
जगाम रामस्य शनैः समीपम् भृत्यैः वृत्तः संपरिदूयमानः ॥ ॥४-२४-२॥
sa bāṣpa pūrṇena mukhen paśyan kṣaṇena nirviṇṇa manā manasvī । jagāma rāmasya śanaiḥ samīpam bhṛtyaiḥ vṛttaḥ saṃparidūyamānaḥ ॥ ॥4-24-2॥
Translation
Watching with a face full of tears, that high-minded one became depressed in a moment. Surrounded by his servants and grieving excessively, he slowly went near Rama.

आंसुओं से भरे मुख से देखते हुए, वह मनस्वी (सुग्रीव) क्षण भर में उदास मन वाला हो गया। अपने सेवकों से घिरा हुआ और अत्यधिक दुःखी होता हुआ वह धीरे-धीरे राम के समीप गया।
English Commentary
Sugriva’s demeanor undergoes a drastic transformation. Instead of a triumphant victor running to thank his ally, he approaches Rama slowly ('śanaiḥ'), weighed down by guilt. The phrase 'nirviṇṇa manā' indicates a sudden onset of depression or detachment from worldly desires upon seeing the cost of his ambition. He is 'saṃparidūyamānaḥ' (extremely pained). His approach to Rama is not to celebrate, but likely to seek solace or to process the enormity of the event. This moment redeems Sugriva to some extent in the eyes of the reader; he is capable of empathy and is not a heartless usurper. He has won the kingdom, but in this moment, he feels he has lost his soul.

सुग्रीव की शारीरिक भाषा (Body language) यहाँ पूरी तरह बदल गई है। वह विजय उल्लास के साथ राम के पास नहीं जाता, बल्कि 'शनैः' (धीरे-धीरे) और 'बाष्प पूर्णेन मुखेन' (रोते हुए चेहरे के साथ) जाता है। 'निर्विण्ण मना' (उदास/विरक्त मन) दर्शाता है कि उसे वैराग्य हो गया है। उसे लग रहा है कि उसने राज्य के लिए घोर पाप किया है। वह राम के पास जा रहा है, शायद सांत्वना के लिए या शायद यह पूछने के लिए कि क्या यह सब वास्तव में आवश्यक था। सेवकों से घिरना उसकी राजा की स्थिति को दिखाता है, लेकिन उसका मन एक अपराधी की तरह है। यह सुग्रीव के चरित्र की गहराई को दिखाता है—वह क्रूर नहीं है, परिस्थितिवश वह शत्रु बना था, लेकिन मूलतः वह भावुक है।
