ना अर्हामि सन्मानम् इमम् प्रजानाम् न यौव राज्यम् कुत एव राज्यम् ।
अधर्म युक्तम् कुल नाश युक्तम् एवम् विधम् राघव कर्म कृत्वा ॥ ॥४-२४-१५॥
nā arhāmi sanmānam imam prajānām na yauva rājyam kuta eva rājyam । adharma yuktam kula nāśa yuktam evam vidham rāghava karma kṛtvā ॥ ॥4-24-15॥
Translation
"O Raghava, having committed such a deed filled with unrighteousness (Adharma) and the destruction of my family, I do not deserve this honor from the people, nor the position of Crown Prince, let alone the Kingdom itself."

"हे राघव! अधर्म और कुल-नाश से युक्त ऐसा घोर कर्म करने के बाद, मैं प्रजा के इस सम्मान के योग्य नहीं हूँ। युवराज के पद के योग्य भी नहीं हूँ, तो राजा बनने की बात तो बहुत दूर है।"
English Commentary
Sugriva rejects the spoils of war on moral grounds. He categorizes his action as adharma yuktam (yoked with unrighteousness) and kula nāśa yuktam (yoked with the destruction of the lineage). This reflects a deep internal conflict where the 'King' within him is silenced by the 'Brother' within him. He feels unworthy of even the Yuvarajya (heir-apparent status), let alone the Rajyam (sovereignty). By rejecting the honor of the people (sanmānam prajānām), he acknowledges that true legitimacy comes from righteousness, not just brute force or alliances. This is a moment of profound self-abnegation.

सुग्रीव का अपराधबोध (guilt) यहाँ चरम पर है। वह सत्ता को 'अधर्म' और 'कुल-नाश' की उपज मानता है। राजनीति में अक्सर 'साध्य' (End) को महत्व दिया जाता है, लेकिन सुग्रीव यहाँ 'साधन' (Means) की अनैतिकता पर ध्यान केंद्रित कर रहा है। वह मानता है कि जिस सिंहासन की नींव भाई के खून पर रखी गई हो, उस पर बैठने का उसे कोई नैतिक अधिकार नहीं है। 'कुत एव राज्यम्' (राज्य की तो बात ही क्या) वाक्यांश यह दर्शाता है कि वह स्वयं को सबसे छोटे पद के लायक भी नहीं समझता। यह सुग्रीव के चरित्र की महानता है कि विजय प्राप्त करने के बाद भी उसकी अंतरात्मा जीवित है और वह सत्ता को त्यागने के लिए तैयार है।
