पापस्य कर्ता अस्मि विगर्हितस्य क्षुद्रस्य लोक अपकृतस्य लोके ।
शोको महान् मम अभिवर्तते अयम् वृष्टेः यथा निम्नम् इव अम्बु वेगः ॥ ॥४-२४-१६॥
pāpasya kartā asmi vigarhitasya kṣudrasya loka apakṛtasya loke । śoko mahān mama abhivartate ayam vṛṣṭeः yathā nimnam iva ambu vegaḥ ॥ ॥4-24-16॥
Translation
"I am the doer of a vile sin, despised by the world and base in nature. This great grief is rushing towards me, just as the force of rain-water rushes towards a low-lying area."

"मैं लोक-निन्दित, नीच और समाज द्वारा तिरस्कृत पाप का कर्ता हूँ। जैसे वर्षा का जल वेग से निचले स्थान (गड्ढे) की ओर दौड़ता है, वैसे ही यह महान शोक मेरी ओर उमड़ कर आ रहा है।"
English Commentary
Sugriva uses a hydraulic metaphor to describe the inevitability of his suffering. Just as water naturally seeks the lowest ground (nimnam), grief naturally seeks out the sinner. By calling himself the doer of a 'vile' (kṣudrasya) and 'despised' (vigarhotasya) act, he accepts full responsibility. He feels that he has created a depression or void in his soul through his actions, and now the floodwaters of sorrow are filling it. It suggests that karma acts like a law of physics; the reaction (grief) follows the action (sin) with irresistible force.

यहाँ सुग्रीव ने एक बहुत ही व्यावहारिक और प्राकृतिक उपमा (Simile) का प्रयोग किया है। जिस प्रकार पानी का स्वभाव है ढलान की ओर बहना, उसी प्रकार पाप का स्वभाव है दुख लाना। 'निम्नम्' (नीचा स्थान) यहाँ सुग्रीव की गिरती हुई मानसिक और नैतिक स्थिति का प्रतीक है। वह स्वयं को 'पापस्य कर्ता' स्वीकार करता है। 'लोक अपकृतस्य' का अर्थ है ऐसा कार्य जो लोक-कल्याण के विरुद्ध हो या जिसे समाज ने ठुकरा दिया हो। सुग्रीव को लगता है कि वह दुख से बच नहीं सकता, क्योंकि उसने अपने कर्मों से स्वयं को दुख का पात्र (receptacle) बना लिया है।
