सोदर्य अघाता अपर गात्र वालः संताप हस्त अक्षि शिरो विषाणः ।
एनोमयो माम् अभिहन्ति हस्ती दृप्तो नदी कूलम् इव प्रवृद्धः ॥ ॥४-२४-१७॥
sodarya aghātā apara gātra vālaḥ santāpa hasta akṣi śiro viṣāṇaḥ । enomayo mām abhihanti hastī dṛpto nadī kūlam iva pravṛddhaḥ ॥ ॥4-24-17॥
Translation
"The killing of my brother forms its hindquarters and tail; remorse forms its trunk, eyes, head, and tusks. This elephant, made of sin (Enomaya), strikes me down just as a raging river strikes down its bank."

"सगे भाई का वध ही जिसका पिछला भाग और पूंछ है, संताप (पश्चाताप) ही जिसकी सूंड, आंखें, सिर और दांत हैं—ऐसा यह पाप रूपी मतवाला हाथी मुझे वैसे ही तोड़ रहा है (कुचल रहा है) जैसे बढ़ा हुआ (उफनता) नदी का वेग किनारे को तोड़ देता है।"
English Commentary
Sugriva constructs a vivid, terrifying metaphor of an 'Elephant of Sin' (Enomaya Hasti). The anatomy of this beast is composed of his actions and feelings: the fratricide is the body, and his burning remorse constitutes the sensory and active organs (trunk, eyes, tusks). This psychological monster attacks him with the ferocity of a flood destroying a riverbank. The imagery conveys the sheer weight and crushing power of his guilt. He feels small and fragile, like an eroding bank (nadi kulam), against the massive force of his own conscience.

यह रामायण के सबसे अलंकृत श्लोकों में से एक है (सांगरूपक अलंकार)। सुग्रीव अपने पाप को एक 'उन्मत्त हाथी' के रूप में देखता है। इस हाथी का शरीर 'भाई के वध' से बना है और इसके अंग 'संताप' (दुख) हैं। जैसे हाथी नदी के किनारे को ढहा देता है, वैसे ही यह पाप सुग्रीव के धैर्य और जीवन को नष्ट कर रहा है। 'एनोमयो' (पापमय) हाथी की कल्पना बहुत भयानक है। यह दिखाता है कि सुग्रीव का दुख कोई अमूर्त भावना नहीं है, बल्कि एक ठोस, विनाशकारी शक्ति है जो उसे शारीरिक रूप से चोट पहुँचा रही है।
