सो अहम् प्रवेक्ष्यामि अति दीप्तम् अग्निम् भ्रत्रा च पुत्रेण च सख्यम् इच्छन् ।
इमे विचेष्यन्ति हरि प्रवीराः सीताम् निदेशे परिवर्तमानाः ॥ ॥४-२४-२२॥
so aham pravekṣyāmi ati dīptam agnim bhratrā ca putreṇa ca sakhyam icchan । ime viceṣyanti hari pravīrāḥ sītām nideśe parivartamānāḥ ॥ ॥4-24-22॥
Translation
"Therefore, wishing for companionship with my brother and son, I shall enter the blazing fire. These mighty Vanara heroes, abiding by your command, will search for Sita."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"इसलिए, मैं अपने भाई और पुत्र (समान भतीजे) के साथ सख्य (मिलन/मैत्री) की इच्छा रखता हुआ, धधकती हुई अग्नि में प्रवेश करूँगा। ये अन्य वानर-वीर आपकी आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए सीता की खोज करेंगे।"
English Commentary
Driven by overwhelming guilt, Sugriva resolves to commit suicide by entering fire (pravekṣyāmi... agnim). This was a recognized form of expiation for grievous sins in ancient times. His motivation is to seek sakhyam (friendship/reunion) with his brother in the afterlife, hoping that death will heal the rift caused by ambition. Crucially, even in this moment of despair, he remains mindful of his pact with Rama. He assures Rama that the search for Sita will continue through the other Vanara commanders. He is trying to abdicate his life while fulfilling his promise.

सुग्रीव प्रायोपवेश या अग्नि-प्रवेश (आत्मदाह) का निर्णय लेता है। यह ग्लानि से मुक्ति का अंतिम मार्ग है। वह 'भ्रात्रा च पुत्रेण च सख्यम् इच्छन्' कहता है—यानी वह मरने के बाद दूसरी दुनिया में भाई और अंगद (जिसे वह मृत मान रहा है या अपने साथ ले जाना चाहता है? नहीं, वह अंगद से मिलने परलोक जाना चाहता है) के साथ मित्रता चाहता है। वह राम को आश्वस्त करता है कि उसके मरने से राम का कार्य नहीं रुकेगा। अन्य वानर वीर ('हरि प्रवीराः') सीता की खोज जारी रखेंगे। यह सुग्रीव का त्याग है—वह अपना जीवन देकर अपने पाप का प्रायश्चित करना चाहता है और राम के कार्य की व्यवस्था भी कर रहा है।
