Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यथा प्रतिज्ञातम् इदम् नरेन्द्र कृतम् त्वया दृउष्ट फलम् च कर्म ।
मम अद्य भोगेषु नरेन्द्र सूनो मनो निवृत्तम् हत जिवितेन ॥ ॥४-२४-४॥
yathā pratijñātam idam narendra kṛtam tvayā dṛuṣṭa phalam ca karma । mama adya bhogeṣu narendra sūno mano nivṛttam hata jivitena ॥ ॥4-24-4॥
Translation
"O Lord of men, you have accomplished this deed exactly as promised, and the fruit of it has been seen. But today, O son of a king, by the destruction of [his] life, my mind has turned away from enjoyments."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे नरेन्द्र! आपने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा के अनुसार यह कार्य संपन्न कर दिया और मैंने उसका फल (वाली वध) देख लिया। किन्तु हे राजकुमार! (मेरे भाई के) जीवन के नष्ट होने से आज मेरा मन भोगों से विरक्त हो गया है।"
English Commentary
This verse captures the hollowness of a victory achieved at too great a cost. Sugriva acknowledges that Rama fulfilled his vow (pratijñātam), but the reality of the outcome (dṛuṣṭa phalam) has traumatized him. The phrase mano nivṛttam (mind has turned back/away) signifies a loss of appetite for the very pleasures (royal power, comfort) he fought for. The realization that his brother's life (jivitena) was the price for these pleasures induces a state of immediate renunciation. It portrays Sugriva not as a power-hungry usurper, but as a conflicted soul who underestimated the emotional weight of fratricide.

यह श्लोक सुग्रीव के वैराग्य (detachment) का आरंभ है। जिस राज्य और भोग के लिए उसने राम से मित्रता की थी, अब वही भोग उसे व्यर्थ लग रहे हैं। 'दृउष्ट फलम्' (फल देख लिया) में गहरा व्यंग्य और दुख है—फल तो मिला, लेकिन वह स्वाद में कड़वा है। 'मनो निवृत्तम्' का अर्थ है कि मन भोग-विलास से हट गया है। सुग्रीव स्वीकार करता है कि विजय की कीमत 'हत जिवितेन' (जीवन की हत्या) थी, और यह कीमत चुकाकर प्राप्त किया गया सुख उसे स्वीकार नहीं है। यह महाभारत के युधिष्ठिर के विषाद जैसा ही भाव है, जहाँ अपनों को मारकर प्राप्त राज्य काटने को दौड़ता है।
