श्रेयो अद्य मन्ये मम शैल मुख्ये तस्मिन् हि वासः चिरम् ऋष्यमूके ।
यथा तथा वर्तयतः स्व वृत्या न इमम् निहत्य त्रिदिवसय लाभः ॥ ॥४-२४-७॥
śreyo adya manye mama śaila mukhye tasmin hi vāsaḥ ciram ṛṣyamūke । yathā tathā vartayataḥ sva vṛtyā na imam nihatya tridivasaya lābhaḥ ॥ ॥4-24-7॥
Translation
"I consider it better today to have dwelt forever on that chief of mountains, Rishyamuka, surviving somehow by my own means, than to gain even Heaven by killing him."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं आज यही बेहतर मानता हूँ कि उस ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर ही, जैसे-तैसे अपना जीवन निर्वाह करते हुए सदा के लिए मेरा वास होता, न कि इसे (भाई को) मारकर स्वर्ग (त्रिदिव) की प्राप्ति भी।"
English Commentary
Sugriva weighs his past suffering against his present gain and finds the gain lacking. He reflects that the life of a fugitive on Mount Rishyamuka, subsisting on meager resources (yathā tathā vartayataḥ), was morally superior (śreyo) to his current status. He explicitly states that killing his brother is not worth the reward, even if that reward were the lordship of Heaven (tridivasaya lābhaḥ), let alone the earthly kingdom of Kishkindha. This underscores the sanctity of blood relations in his heart, which re-emerges once the cloud of anger has passed. He prefers an innocent struggle over a guilty triumph.

यह तुलनात्मक पश्चाताप है। सुग्रीव अपने पिछले कष्टप्रद जीवन की तुलना वर्तमान की 'सफलता' से करता है और निष्कर्ष निकालता है कि पिछला जीवन ही श्रेष्ठ था। ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर जीवन कठिन था, भोजन और पानी का अभाव था ('यथा तथा वर्तयतः' - जैसे-तैसे गुजारा करना), लेकिन वहां एक सुकून था—हाथ खून से रंगे नहीं थे। सुग्रीव कहता है कि भाई को मारकर यदि 'त्रिदिव' (स्वर्ग) का राज्य भी मिले, तो वह उसे नहीं चाहिए। यह एक बहुत बड़ा बयान है, जो दर्शाता है कि अंतरात्मा की शांति भौतिक सुखों से कहीं ऊपर है। विपत्ति में धर्म सुरक्षित था, लेकिन संपत्ति में धर्म का नाश हो गया।
