भ्राता कथम् नाम महा गुणस्य भ्रातुर् वधम् राम विरोचयेत ।
राजस्य दुःखस्य च वीर सारम् विचिन्तयन् काम पुरस्कृतो अपि ॥ ॥४-२४-९॥
bhrātā katham nāma mahā guṇasya bhrātur vadham rāma virocayet । rājasya duḥkhasya ca vīra sāram vicintayan kāma puraskṛto api ॥ ॥4-24-9॥
Translation
"O Hero, how indeed can a brother, even if driven by desire and pondering over the kingdom and his own suffering, approve of the killing of a brother who possesses great virtues?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे वीर राम! काम (इच्छाओं) के वशीभूत होकर और राज्य तथा (अपने) दुःख के बारे में सोचते हुए भी, कोई भाई, महान गुणों वाले (दूसरे) भाई के वध की इच्छा कैसे कर सकता है?"
English Commentary
Sugriva questions the fundamental morality of his actions. He asks how it is possible (katham nāma) for one to sanction the murder of a virtuous brother, even when motivated by personal suffering (duḥkhasya) and desire for the kingdom (kāma). He implies that the bond of brotherhood should have been strong enough to withstand the temptations of power and the memory of past grievances. By referring to Vali as one with "great virtues," Sugriva erases the narrative of Vali as a villain, reframing the conflict as his own moral failure to uphold the dharma of a brother.

सुग्रीव यहाँ एक सामान्य प्रश्न (rhetorical question) के माध्यम से अपने कृत्य की निंदा कर रहा है। वह हैरान है कि वह इतना नीचे कैसे गिर गया। यद्यपि 'काम पुरस्कृतो' (इच्छाओं द्वारा प्रेरित) होना और 'दुःख' का स्मरण करना स्वाभाविक है, फिर भी 'भ्रातुर् वधम्' (भाई का वध) एक ऐसा पाप है जो इन कारणों से उचित नहीं ठहराया जा सकता। विशेषकर तब जब भाई 'महा गुणस्य' (महान गुणों वाला) हो। वाली के दोष अब सुग्रीव को नहीं दिख रहे, केवल उसके गुण (शौर्य, दान, क्षमा) याद आ रहे हैं। यह श्लोक भाई के रिश्ते की पवित्रता को पुनर्स्थापित करता है, जिसे राजनीति ने धूमिल कर दिया था।
