Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स सुग्रीवम् च ताराम् च स अंगदाम् सह लक्ष्मणः ।
समान शोकः काकुत्स्थः सांत्वयन् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥४-२५-१॥
sa sugrīvam ca tārām ca sa aṃgadām saha lakṣmaṇaḥ |
samāna śokaḥ kākutsthaḥ sāṃtvayan idam abravīt ॥4-25-1॥
Translation
Accompanied by Lakshmana, Rama (descendant of Kakutstha), who was experiencing equal grief, spoke these words while consoling Sugriva, Tara, and Angada.

लक्ष्मण सहित, काकुत्स्थ कुल के श्रीराम ने, जो स्वयं भी शोक मग्न थे, सुग्रीव, तारा और अंगद को सांत्वना देते हुए यह वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the profound empathy and righteousness of Lord Rama. Although he was the one who eliminated Vali, the term 'samāna śokaḥ' (equally grieving) reveals that he was not a ruthless slayer. He genuinely mourned the loss of the mighty monkey king. Rama understood the necessity of the act for the preservation of Dharma, yet he carried the heavy burden of taking a life. Here, stepping into the role of a guardian, he consoles the bereaved family. It illustrates a key tenet of leadership: ensuring justice must be balanced with compassion, and even the executor of justice can feel the pain of the necessary punishment.

यहाँ श्रीराम की संवेदनशीलता और धर्मपरायणता स्पष्ट होती है। यद्यपि उन्होंने वाली का वध किया था, परन्तु वे निष्ठुर हत्यारा नहीं थे। 'समान शोकः' शब्द यह दर्शाता है कि श्रीराम को भी वानरराज वाली के निधन का गहरा दुख था। वे जानते थे कि धर्म की रक्षा के लिए यह वध आवश्यक था, किंतु एक वीर के प्राण लेने की मानवीय पीड़ा उनके हृदय में भी थी। वे अब एक अभिभावक की भांति, सुग्रीव और तारा के कुल को इस विपत्ति से उबारने के लिए सांत्वना दे रहे हैं। यह श्लोक सिद्ध करता है कि दंड विधान करते समय भी राजा या न्यायकर्ता के मन में करुणा का भाव होना चाहिए।
