लोक वृत्तम् अनुष्ठेयम् कृतम् वो बाष्प मोक्षणम् ।
न कालाद् उत्तरम् किंचित् कर्म शक्यम् उपासितुम् ॥४-२५-३॥
loka vṛttam anuṣṭheyam kṛtam vo bāṣpa mokṣaṇam |
na kālād uttaram kiṃcit karma śakyam upāsitum ॥4-25-3॥
Translation
The social custom (of mourning) has been observed, and you have shed tears. No duty can be performed effectively once the appropriate time for it has passed.
हिंदी अनुवाद
लोकोचित व्यवहार (रोदन आदि) का पालन आप लोगों ने कर लिया और पर्याप्त आंसू बहा लिए। अब काल (समय) निकल जाने के बाद किसी भी कार्य को करना संभव नहीं होता, (अतः समय रहते कर्तव्य पूर्ण करें)।
English Commentary
Rama acknowledges the necessity of grieving as a social norm ('loka vṛttam'), validating their feelings so far. However, he introduces the critical constraint of Time (Kala). Actions must be performed within their designated timeframes to be fruitful; delayed duties often lose their efficacy or become inauspicious. Specifically, regarding funeral rites, timing is crucial for the sanctity of the process. Rama acts as a wise counselor, urging them to recognize that while emotion has its place, it cannot be allowed to override the irreversible flow of time and the duties bound to it.

इस श्लोक में 'समय' (काल) की महत्ता पर बल दिया गया है। श्रीराम स्वीकार करते हैं कि दुख प्रकट करना स्वाभाविक 'लोक-वृत्त' है, जिसे रोका नहीं जा सकता। परन्तु, हर क्रिया की एक सीमा होती है। यदि अंतिम संस्कार में अत्यधिक विलंब हुआ, तो यह शास्त्र विरुद्ध होगा और देह की पवित्रता भी नष्ट हो सकती है। श्रीराम राजनीति और धर्मनीति के ज्ञाता हैं; वे जानते हैं कि राज्य और परिवार को स्थिर करने के लिए शोक की अवधि को सीमित करना आवश्यक है। बीता हुआ समय कभी लौटकर नहीं आता, इसलिए वर्तमान क्षण के कर्तव्य को प्राथमिकता देनी चाहिए।
