Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तम् बुद्धिमान् वाक्य कोविदः ।
चतुर्दश समाः सौम्य ग्रामम् वा यदि वा पुरम् ॥ ॥४-२६-९॥
Pratyuvāca hanūmantam buddhimān vākya kovidaḥ । Caturdaśa samāḥ saumya grāmam vā yadi vā puram ॥ ॥4-26-9॥
Translation
The wise one, skilled in speech (Rama), replied to Hanuman: "O gentle one! For fourteen years, (I shall enter) neither a village nor a city."

"बुद्धिमान और वाणी के मर्मज्ञ (राम) ने हनुमान को उत्तर दिया— "हे सौम्य! चौदह वर्षों तक मैं किसी भी गाँव या नगर में (प्रवेश नहीं करूँगा)।"
English Commentary
Rama displays his unwavering integrity. Despite the temptation of comfort and royal reception, he declines the invitation based on his vow of exile. He is described as "Vakya-kovida" (expert in speech), meaning he refuses firmly but gracefully, citing his duty rather than personal preference. He reminds Hanuman of the condition: for fourteen years, he must dwell in the forest, avoiding all "gramam" (villages) and "puram" (cities). This reinforces his adherence to Dharma over convenience.

राम यहाँ अपने 'सत्यसंध' (सत्य पर डटे रहने वाले) चरित्र का परिचय देते हैं। 'वाक्य कोविदः' (बोलने में चतुर) विशेषण महत्वपूर्ण है—राम अत्यंत विनम्रता से हनुमान के प्रस्ताव को अस्वीकार करते हैं, बिना उन्हें आहत किए। वे अपने वनवास की प्रतिज्ञा का हवाला देते हैं, जो उन्हें नगर या गाँव में प्रवेश करने से रोकती है। यह उनके आत्म-संयम और धर्म के प्रति निष्ठा को दर्शाता है; विजय और राजसत्ता मिलने के बाद भी वे अपने पिता को दिए गए वचन को नहीं भूलते।
