Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आविवेश न तम् निद्रा निशासु शयनम् गतम् ।
तत् समुत्थेन शोकेन बाष्प उपहत चेतसम् ॥ ॥४-२७-३२॥
Āviveśa na tam nidrā niśāsu śayanam gatam । Tat samutthena śokena bāṣpa upahata cetasam ॥ ॥4-27-32॥
Translation
Sleep did not come to him at night even when he went to bed; his mind was tormented by the grief born of that (separation) and choked with tears.

रात्रियों में शैया पर जाने पर भी उन्हें नींद नहीं आती थी। सीता के अपहरण से उत्पन्न शोक के कारण आँसुओं से उनका चित्त व्याकुल रहता था।
English Commentary
This verse describes the physical toll of Rama’s emotional state. He suffers from insomnia (nidrā na āviveśa). The phrase bāṣpa upahata cetasam implies that his consciousness was clouded or struck down by unshed tears and grief. It portrays Rama not just as a god or hero, but as a deeply loving husband suffering an intensely human tragedy.

श्रीराम की मानसिक स्थिति का कारुणिक चित्रण है। 'बाष्प उपहत चेतसम्' का अर्थ है कि उनका मन आंसुओं (या दबी हुई रुलाई) से आहत था। निद्रा का न आना (अनिद्रा) वियोग श्रृंगार का एक प्रमुख 'अनुभाव' (लक्षण) है। एक महायोद्धा और धीर पुरुष का इस प्रकार विचलित होना उनके मानवीय पक्ष और प्रेम की गहराई को दिखाता है।
