Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
क्वचित् बाष्प अभिसंरुद्धान् वर्ष आगम समुत्सुकान् ।
कुटजान् पश्य सौमित्रे पुष्टितान् गिरि सानुषु ।
मम शोक अभिभूतस्य काम सम्दीपनान् स्थितान् ॥ ॥४-२८-१४॥
Kvacit bāṣpa abhisamruddhān varṣa āgama samutsukān । Kuṭajān paśya saumitre puṣṭitān giri sānuṣu । mama śoka abhibhūtasya kāma samdīpanān sthitān ॥ ॥4-28-14॥
Translation
O Saumitri (Lakshmana)! Behold the Kutaja trees on the mountain slopes, shrouded in mist here and there, blooming with joy at the advent of rain. For one like me, overwhelmed by grief, they stand there only to inflame my passion and longing.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्र (लक्ष्मण)! पर्वत के शिखरों पर कहीं-कहीं भाप (धुंध) से घिरे हुए, वर्षा के आगमन से प्रसन्न और पुष्पित कुटज के वृक्षों को देखो। शोक से व्याकुल मुझ जैसे (विरही) के लिए ये काम को उद्दीप्त करने वाले होकर खड़े हैं।
English Commentary
Rama draws a contrast between the joy of nature and his own sorrow. The Kutaja trees are blossoming, rejoicing in the arrival of the rain and mist. However, for a separated lover (virahi), this vibrant beauty serves as an irritant rather than a balm. In Sanskrit poetics, this is known as 'Uddipana Vibhava'—where beautiful surroundings stimulate and intensify the feeling of separation. Rama points out to Lakshmana that these blooming trees, while beautiful, only serve to kindle his longing for Sita.

श्रीराम प्रकृति के सौंदर्य और अपनी विरह वेदना के बीच के विरोधाभास को व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। कुटज के फूल वर्षा पाकर खिल उठे हैं, जो प्रकृति के उल्लास का संकेत है। परन्तु, एक विरही के लिए यही सौंदर्य कष्टकारी बन जाता है। इसे 'उद्दीपन विभाव' कहा जाता है, जहाँ सुरम्य वातावरण दुख को कम करने के बजाय उसे और बढ़ा देता है। श्रीराम लक्ष्मण को संबोधित करते हुए कहते हैं कि यह दृश्य उनके शोक को और अधिक प्रज्वलित कर रहा है।
