मार्ग अनुगः शैल वन अनुसारी संप्रस्थितो मेघ रवम् निशम्य ।
युद्ध अभिकामः प्रतिनाद शन्की मत्तो गजेन्द्रः प्रतिसंनिवृत्तः ॥ ॥४-२८-३२॥
Mārga anugaḥ śaila vana anusārī samprasthito megha ravam niśamya । yuddha abhikāmaḥ pratināda śankī matto gajendraḥ pratisamnivṛttaḥ ॥ ॥4-28-32॥
Translation
Following the path and wandering through mountains and forests, a rogue elephant, upon hearing the thunder of clouds, suspects it to be a rival's call and, eager for battle, turns back to fight.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रास्ते पर चलता हुआ, पर्वत और वनों में विचरने वाला कोई मतवाला हाथी, बादलों की गरज सुनकर उसे प्रतिद्वंद्वी हाथी की ललकार समझता है और युद्ध की इच्छा से पीछे मुड़ता है।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the psychology of a dominant wild elephant. Hearing the deep rumble of thunder, the elephant mistakes it for the trumpet of a rival male. Driven by instinct and eager for a fight ('yuddha abhikāma'), he stops his journey and turns back to face this imaginary challenger. It illustrates the blurring lines between nature's sounds and animal instincts during the storm.

यह श्लोक हाथी के भ्रम (bhranti) का चित्रण करता है। मतवाला हाथी अपनी शक्ति के मद में इतना चूर है कि वह प्राकृतिक ध्वनि (बादलों की गरज) को भी चुनौती मान लेता है। यह वर्षा काल में वन्य जीवों के आक्रामक व्यवहार का सजीव वर्णन है।
