महान्ति कूटानि महीधराणां धाराविधौतान्यधिकं विभान्ति।
महाप्रमाणैर्विपु लैः प्रपातैर्मुक्ताकलापैरिव लम्बमानैः॥ ॥४-२८-४८॥
Mahānti kūṭāni mahīdharāṇāṃ dhārāvidhautānyadhikaṃ vibhānti। Mahāpramāṇairvipulaiḥ prapātairmuktākalāpairiva lambamānaiḥ॥ ॥4-28-48॥
Translation
The mighty peaks of the mountains, washed clean by streams of rain, shine with added brilliance. The massive, voluminous waterfalls cascading down look like pearl necklaces hanging from them.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वर्षा की धाराओं से धुले हुए पर्वतों के विशाल शिखर बहुत अधिक सुशोभित हो रहे हैं। उनसे गिरते हुए बड़े और विशाल झरने ऐसे लगते हैं मानो मोतियों के हार (मुक्ताकलाप) लटक रहे हों।
English Commentary
Visual contrast is the key here. The mountain peaks, washed clean (dhārā vidhautāni) by the rain, provide a dark, majestic backdrop. Against this, the cascading waterfalls (prapātaiḥ) appear white and frothy. The poet compares these long waterfalls to muktākalāpaiḥ (strings of pearls) hanging down the neck of the mountain. This imagery transforms the rugged terrain into a figure of elegance and adorned beauty, showcasing Valmiki's skill in finding the delicate within the massive.

वाल्मीकि रामायण में प्रकृति चित्रण प्रायः आभूषणों की उपमाओं से किया जाता है। यहाँ काले/नीले पहाड़ों पर गिरते हुए सफेद झागदार झरने मोतियों की माला (मुक्ताकलाप) जैसे लगते हैं। 'धारा विधौतानि' का अर्थ है कि बारिश ने धूल मिटाकर पर्वतों को चमका दिया है। यह दृश्य अत्यंत मनोरम है—विशाल पर्वत (नायक) ने मानो झरनों रूपी हार पहन रखा है। सौंदर्यबोध की दृष्टि से यह सर्ग का एक उत्कृष्ट श्लोक है।
