संध्या राग उत्थितैः ताम्रैः अंतेषु अधिक पाण्डुरैः ।
स्निग्धैः अभ्र पट च्छेदैः बद्ध व्रणम् इव अंबरम् ॥ ॥४-२८-५॥
saṃdhyā rāga utthitaiḥ tāmraiḥ aṃteṣu adhika pāṇḍuraiḥ । snigdhaiḥ abhra paṭa cchedaiḥ baddha vraṇam iva ambaram ॥ ॥4-28-5॥
Translation
With reddish clouds rising from the evening twilight, which are whiter at the edges and glossy, the sky looks like a wound bandaged with pieces of cloth.

संध्या की लालिमा से युक्त, किनारों पर अधिक सफेद और स्निग्ध मेघ-खंडों के कारण आकाश ऐसा प्रतीत होता है मानो किसी घाव पर पट्टी (महम) बांधी गई हो।
English Commentary
This verse employs a striking and somewhat visceral simile that reflects Rama's wounded psyche. Describing the evening sky, he compares the reddish clouds (colored by twilight) with white edges to bandages dressed over a wound. The red center represents the raw wound or blood, while the pale, white edges ('adhika pāṇḍuraiḥ') represent the cloth strips or bandages ('paṭa cchedaiḥ'). The term 'snigdhaiḥ' (glossy/smooth) suggests the texture of a salve or ointment. While a casual observer might find the sunset beautiful, Rama, nursing the deep emotional wound of Sita's abduction, projects his pain onto the canvas of the sky. The sky itself appears injured to him. This is a masterclass in 'pathetic fallacy,' where the external world is colored entirely by the internal emotional state of the observer. It vividly conveys that the universe feels broken to Rama.

यह श्लोक उपमा अलंकार का एक उत्कृष्ट और कुछ हद तक वेदनापूर्ण उदाहरण है। आकाश में संध्या के समय लालिमा छाई है, और बादल किनारों पर सफेद हैं। राम को यह दृश्य ऐसा लगता है जैसे किसी घाव (व्रण) पर पट्टियाँ बंधी हों। बादलों के लाल रंग की तुलना रक्त-रंजित घाव से और उनके सफेद किनारों की तुलना पट्टी के पुराने या सफेद कपड़ों से की गई है। 'स्निग्ध' शब्द बादलों की नमी और चिकनेपन को दर्शाता है, जैसे किसी घाव पर लगा मरहम। यह उपमा राम के आंतरिक घाव—सीता के हरण से उपजी पीड़ा—का बाह्य प्रक्षेपण (projection) है। सामान्यतः संध्या का दृश्य सुंदर माना जाता है, किन्तु एक दुखी हृदय को उसमें भी पीड़ा और आघात का ही प्रतिबिंब दिखाई देता है। वाल्मीकि यहाँ प्रकृति के माध्यम से नायक की मनोवैज्ञानिक स्थिति को उजागर कर रहे हैं।
