Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उपकारेण वीरो हि प्रतिकारेण युज्यते।
अकृतज्ञोऽप्रतिकृतो हन्ति सत्त्ववतां मनः॥ ॥४-२८-६४॥
Upakāreṇa vīro hi pratikāreṇa yujyate। Akṛtajño'pratikṛto hanti sattvavatāṃ manaḥ॥ ॥4-28-64॥
Translation
Indeed, a hero responds to a favor with a return favor. An ungrateful person, who does not reciprocate, destroys the heart of the virtuous.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वीर पुरुष उपकार के बदले प्रत्युपकार (बदला चुकाना) से युक्त होता है। जो उपकार का बदला नहीं चुकाता, वह अकृतघ्न व्यक्ति सज्जनों के मन (भावनाओं) को चोट पहुँचाता है (मार डालता है)।
English Commentary
Rama enunciates a universal code of conduct: Heroism is defined by reciprocity (pratikāreṇa). To accept help and not return it is the mark of an akṛtajña (ungrateful person). Rama notes that such ingratitude 'kills the spirit' (hanti manaḥ) of the good people (sattvavatāṃ) who offered help. It serves as a subtle warning of the moral weight resting on Sugriva's shoulders.

यह एक सुभाषित (नीति वाक्य) है। राम कहते हैं कि कृतज्ञता (gratitude) वीरता का लक्षण है। उपकार लेकर उसे भूल जाना न केवल कायरता है, बल्कि यह उपकार करने वाले के 'सत्व' (अच्छाई/भरोसे) की हत्या करने जैसा है। यद्यपि राम सुग्रीव पर भरोसा करते हैं, फिर भी वे लक्ष्मण को सामान्य धर्म समझा रहे हैं कि कृतघ्नता कितना बड़ा पाप है।
