एषा घर्म परिक्लिष्टा नव वारि परिप्लुता ।
सीता इव शोक संतप्ता मही बाष्पम् विमुंचति ॥ ॥४-२८-७॥
eṣā gharma parikliṣṭā nava vāri pariplutā । sītā iva śoka saṃtaptā mahī bāṣpam vimuṃcati ॥ ॥4-28-7॥
Translation
Afflicted by the heat and now flooded with new water, this earth is releasing vapor, just as Sita, tormented by grief, sheds tears.

ग्रीष्म की गर्मी से पीड़ित और अब नवीन जल से भीगी हुई यह पृथ्वी, शोक से संतप्त सीता की भाँति, वाष्प (आँसू) छोड़ रही है।
English Commentary
This verse contains a profoundly emotive simile. Rama observes the earth, which has been scorched by the summer heat ('gharma parikliṣṭā') and is now drenched by fresh rain ('nava vāri pariplutā'). As a physical reaction, the hot earth releases steam. Rama immediately equates this rising vapor to the tears of Sita. Just as the earth was tormented by the heat, Sita is tormented by grief ('śoka saṃtaptā'). The word 'bāṣpam' is brilliantly chosen as it signifies both 'vapor/steam' and 'tears'. The earth releasing heat in the form of steam is likened to Sita releasing her pent-up grief in the form of tears. It shows how Rama’s mind is constantly dwelling on Sita’s suffering. He sees her pain mirrored in the elemental processes of nature. The image is one of release after long suffering, yet it underscores the intense heat (pain) that preceded it.

यह श्लोक इस सर्ग के सबसे मार्मिक श्लोकों में से एक है। राम पृथ्वी को देखते हैं, जिस पर अभी-अभी वर्षा हुई है। तपती धरती पर जब पानी गिरता है, तो उससे भाप (वाष्प) निकलती है। राम को यह दृश्य सीता की याद दिलाता है। जैसे पृथ्वी गर्मी ('घर्म') से पीड़ित थी, वैसे ही सीता राक्षसों द्वारा दी गई पीड़ा से त्रस्त हैं। जैसे पृथ्वी अब जल से भीगकर भाप छोड़ रही है, वैसे ही राम कल्पना करते हैं कि सीता आंसुओं ('बाष्प') के माध्यम से अपना शोक व्यक्त कर रही होंगी। 'बाष्प' शब्द का अर्थ भाप और आंसू दोनों होता है, जिसका श्लेष रूप में अद्भुत प्रयोग हुआ है। यहाँ राम की सहानुभूति और स्मृति की तीव्रता दिखाई देती है; वे भौतिक जगत की हर घटना को सीता के कष्ट से जोड़ रहे हैं। यह उपमा सीता के प्रति राम के अनन्य प्रेम और चिंता को दर्शाती है।
