मेघ उदर विनिर्मुक्ताः कर्पूर दल शीतलाः ।
शक्यम् अंजलिभिः पातुम् वाताः केतकि गन्धिनः ॥ ॥४-२८-८॥
megha udara vinirmuktāḥ karpūra dala śītalāḥ । śakyam aṃjalibhiḥ pātum vātāḥ ketaki gaṃdhinaḥ ॥ ॥4-28-8॥
Translation
Released from the womb of clouds, cool like camphor leaves, and fragrant with Ketaki scent, the breeze is such that it could almost be drunk with cupped hands.

मेघों के उदर से मुक्त, कपूर के दल के समान शीतल और केतकी की गंध से सुवासित वायु को मानो अंजलियों भरकर पिया जा सकता है।
English Commentary
Rama describes the sensual quality of the monsoon breeze with exquisite detail. The air is described as originating from the "belly of the clouds," ensuring its moisture and freshness. It is as cooling as camphor leaves and heavy with the fragrance of Ketaki flowers. The description reaches a poetic peak when Rama suggests the breeze is so palpable and refreshing that one could cup one's hands and "drink" it ('śakyam aṃjalibhiḥ pātum'). This hyperbole emphasizes the density, moisture, and revitalizing quality of the air. However, in the context of Indian aesthetics (Rasa Shastra), such sensory delights—coolness and fragrance—are traditionally painful for a separated lover, as they evoke desires that cannot be fulfilled. The mention of Ketaki is specific to the rainy season, grounding the poetry in botanical reality.

यह श्लोक वर्षा ऋतु की वायु की शीतलता और सुगंध का वर्णन करता है। हवा इतनी घनी और सुखद है कि राम कहते हैं इसे केवल महसूस नहीं, बल्कि पानी की तरह अंजलियों (हथेलियों) से पिया जा सकता है। यह ' synesthesia' (इंद्रिय-बोध का मिश्रण) का उदाहरण है, जहाँ स्पर्श (वायु) का वर्णन स्वाद/पान (पीना) के रूप में किया गया है। वायु की तीन विशेषताएं बताई गई हैं: 1) यह मेघों के बीच से होकर आ रही है, अतः शीतल है। 2) यह कपूर के पत्तों जैसी ठंडी है। 3) इसमें केतकी के फूलों की मादक सुगंध है। केतकी वर्षा ऋतु का विशिष्ट पुष्प है। यद्यपि यह वर्णन सुखद है, लेकिन विरही राम के लिए ऐसी सुगंधित और शीतल वायु 'उद्दीपन' का कार्य करती है—अर्थात यह उनके वियोग को और अधिक बढ़ा देती है, क्योंकि ऐसे सुखद वातावरण में प्रिय का साथ न होना अधिक कष्टकारी होता है।
