Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विदिता नौ गुणा विद्वन् सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ।
तम् एव च अवाम् मार्गावः सुग्रीवम् प्लवगेश्वरम् ॥ ॥४-३-३७॥
Viditā nau guṇā vidvan sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ । Tam eva ca avām mārgāvaḥ sugrīvam plavageśvaram ॥ ॥4-3-37॥
Translation
O learned one! The virtues of the high-souled Sugriva are known to us. We are indeed searching for that very Sugriva, the Lord of the Monkeys.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे विद्वान (हनुमान)! हमें महात्मा सुग्रीव के गुणों के बारे में ज्ञात है। हम उन वानरराज सुग्रीव को ही खोज रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Lakshmana responds here with complete transparency and respect. By using the term 'Vidvan' (learned one), he honors Hanuman. Lakshmana clarifies that they are not ignorant of Sugriva; rather, having heard of his virtues, they are actively seeking him. This is a significant diplomatic move—acknowledging that 'we need you' and validating the status of the other party's leader. The use of 'Mahātmanaḥ' (high-souled) for Sugriva signals a positive disposition, reassuring Hanuman that these two princes are not enemies but potential allies seeking collaboration.
