Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
देशम् कथम् इमम् प्राप्तौ भवन्तौ वर वर्णिनौ ।
त्रासयन्तौ मृग गणान् अन्याम् च वन चारिणः ॥ ॥४-३-६॥
Deśam katham imam prāptau bhavantau vara varṇinau । Trāsayantau mṛga gaṇān anyām ca vana cāriṇaḥ ॥ ॥4-3-6॥
Translation
"O you of excellent complexion! How have you arrived in this region? You are frightening the herds of deer and other forest dwellers."

(हनुमान पूछते हैं): "हे श्रेष्ठ वर्ण (रंग-रूप) वाले वीरों! आप इस देश (वन) में कैसे पधारे हैं? आपके आगमन से हिरणों के झुंड और अन्य वनवासी जीव भयभीत हो रहे हैं।"
English Commentary
Hanuman initiates his inquiry with a compliment wrapped in an observation. He addresses them as Vara varninau (ones with beautiful complexion/color), acknowledging their royal physiology. However, he immediately notes the effect of their presence: they are terrifying the wildlife (Mruga ganan). By projecting the fear onto the animals, Hanuman subtly hints at the immense, perhaps dangerous, power these two emit without explicitly stating that he or Sugriva is afraid. It is a probing question designed to make them explain their purpose in the forest.

हनुमान जी अब सीधे प्रश्न पर आते हैं, लेकिन बड़ी चतुराई से। वे पहले उनकी सुंदरता ('वर वर्णिनौ') की प्रशंसा करते हैं, फिर उनके प्रभाव का वर्णन करते हैं। वे यह नहीं कहते कि "मैं या मेरा राजा आपसे डर रहे हैं," बल्कि वे कहते हैं कि "वन के पशु" डर रहे हैं। यह एक परोक्ष तरीका है यह बताने का कि उनका व्यक्तित्व इतना प्रभावशाली और उग्र है कि प्रकृति भी उसे महसूस कर रही है। यह प्रश्न उनकी पहचान जानने का एक माध्यम है।
