पाण्डुरम् गगनम् दृष्ट्वा विमलम् चन्द्र मण्डलम् ।
शारदीम् रजनीम् चैव दृष्ट्वा ज्योत्स्न अनुलेपनाम् ॥ ॥४-३०-२॥
pāṇḍuram gaganam dṛṣṭvā vimalam candra maṇḍalam |
shāradīm rajanīm caiva dṛṣṭvā jyotsna anulepanām ॥4-30-2॥
Translation
Seeing the white sky, the spotless orb of the moon, and the autumnal night anointed with moonlight... (continued in next verse).

श्वेत (धवल) आकाश, निर्मल चन्द्र-मण्डल और चाँदनी से लिपी हुई (अनुलेपित) उस शरद ऋतु की रात्रि को देखकर... (अगले श्लोक के साथ अन्वय)।
English Commentary
Poet Valmiki paints a captivating picture of the autumn night. 'Panduram gaganam' (white sky) indicates the absence of heavy rain clouds. 'Jyotsna anulepanam' is a beautiful metaphor where moonlight is imagined as a sandal paste anointed on the body of the night. This beauty of nature inflames the separation anxiety within Rama. It is a literary principle that nature, which is pleasant during union, becomes scorching like fire during separation.

कवि वाल्मीकि शरद ऋतु की रात्रि का अत्यंत मनोरम चित्र खींचते हैं। 'पाण्डुरम् गगनम्' (सफेद आकाश) बादलों की अनुपस्थिति को दर्शाता है। 'ज्योत्स्ना अनुलेपनाम्' एक सुंदर रूपक है, जहाँ चाँदनी को रात्रि के शरीर पर लगाए गए चंदन के लेप (उबटन) की तरह कल्पित किया गया है। प्रकृति का यह सौंदर्य राम के भीतर के विरह को उद्दीप्त करता है। यह साहित्य का एक सिद्धान्त है कि संयोग (मिलन) में जो प्रकृति सुखद होती है, वियोग में वही प्रकृति अग्नि के समान दाहक हो जाती है।
