शुभम् वा यदि वा पापम् यो हि वाक्यम् उदीरितम् ।
सत्येन परिगृह्णाति स वीरः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ ॥४-३०-७१॥
śubhaṃ vā yadi vā pāpam yo hi vākyam udīritam । satyena parigṛhṇāti sa vīraḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥ ॥4-30-71॥
Translation
Whether the spoken word is good or potentially harmful (difficult to execute), he who adheres to it with truthfulness is truly a hero and the best among men.

चाहे वह (वचन) शुभ हो अथवा पापपूर्ण (कठिन या अप्रिय) हो, जो अपने मुख से निकले हुए वाक्य का सत्यता से पालन करता है, वही वीर और पुरुषोत्तम है।
English Commentary
Rama defines the true characteristic of heroism (Vira) and moral excellence (Purushottama). The phrasing shubham va yadi va papam suggests that the obligation to fulfill a vow exists regardless of whether the outcome is pleasant or painful for the promisor. The sanctity of the spoken word (Vak) is paramount in Vedic and post-Vedic tradition. A hero is not just defined by martial prowess but by the unwavering strength of his commitment. This verse serves as a moral mirror; Rama indirectly reminds Lakshmana (and through him, Sugriva) that true stature comes from fidelity to one's word, a standard Sugriva is currently failing to meet.

यह श्लोक पिछले श्लोक का विरोधाभास (contrast) प्रस्तुत करता है। यहाँ 'पापम्' का अर्थ नैतिक पाप नहीं, बल्कि ऐसा वचन है जिसका पालन करना कष्टदायक या स्वयं के लिए हानिकारक हो सकता है। राम का मत है कि वचन की पवित्रता (Integrity) परिणाम से ऊपर है। एक बार जिह्वा से जो निकल गया, उसका पालन करना ही वीरता का लक्षण है। यहाँ 'पुरुषोत्तम' शब्द का प्रयोग उस व्यक्ति के लिए किया गया है जो सत्य के प्रति निष्ठावान है। यह दशरथ और स्वयं राम के चरित्र का भी प्रतिबिंब है, जिन्होंने कठिन परिस्थितियों में भी वचन का त्याग नहीं किया, और अब वे सुग्रीव से भी उसी उच्च आदर्श की अपेक्षा कर रहे हैं।
