Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स अमात्य परिषत् क्रीडन् पानम् एव उपसेवते ।
शोक दीनेषु न अस्मासु सुग्रीवः कुरुते दयाम् ॥ ॥४-३०-७८॥
sa amātya pariṣat krīḍan pānam eva upasevate । śoka dīneṣu na asmāsu sugrīvaḥ kurute dayām ॥ ॥4-30-78॥
Translation
Playing with his ministers and council, he is addicted only to drinking; Sugriva shows no pity on us, who are wretched with grief.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह मंत्रियों और सभासदों के साथ क्रीड़ा करते हुए केवल मदिरापान का सेवन कर रहा है। हम जो शोक से दीन-हीन हो रहे हैं, उस सुग्रीव को हम पर दया भी नहीं आती।
English Commentary
The juxtaposition here is stark. Sugriva is surrounded by his cabinet (amatya parishad), but instead of strategizing, they are engaged in panam (drinking) and revelry. This indicates a systemic failure in Kishkindha's administration; the advisors are corrupt with pleasure alongside the king. Rama describes himself and Lakshmana as shoka dina (pitiable/wretched due to grief). The expectation was not just military aid, but daya (compassion/pity). Sugriva’s lack of empathy for his friends' suffering is portrayed as a moral failing greater than his political delay.
हिंदी टीका
राम सुग्रीव की दिनचर्या और अपनी स्थिति की तुलना करते हैं। सुग्रीव का दरबार अब राजनीति का नहीं, बल्कि 'पानम्' (मद्यपान) और 'क्रीडा' का केंद्र बन गया है। सबसे चुभने वाली बात यह है कि सुग्रीव ने अपने मंत्रियों (अमात्य) को भी इस भोग में शामिल कर लिया है, जिससे उसे सही सलाह देने वाला कोई नहीं बचा। दूसरी ओर राम 'शोक दीनेषु' (शोक से दयनीय) हैं। मित्र का धर्म है मित्र के दुख को दूर करना, पर सुग्रीव 'दया' भी नहीं दिखा रहा। यहाँ राम का स्वर क्रोध के साथ-साथ गहरी वेदना से भरा है।
