Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तम् ते भयपरीत अंगाः क्षुब्धम् दृष्ट्वा प्लवंगमाः ।
काल मृत्यु युगांताअभम् शतशो विद्रुता दिशः ॥४-३१-२०॥
tam te bhayaparīta aṅgāḥ kṣubdham dṛṣṭvā plavaṃgamāḥ । kāla mṛtyu yugāntāabham śataśo vidrutā diśaḥ ॥ ॥4-31-20॥
Translation
Seeing him agitated and looking like Death at the end of the Yuga, the monkeys, their limbs filled with terror, fled in hundreds in all directions.

लक्ष्मण को क्षुब्ध (अत्यंत क्रुद्ध) और युगांत के काल-मृत्यु के समान देखकर, वे वानर भय से कांप उठे और सैंकड़ों की संख्या में दसों दिशाओं में भाग खड़े हुए।
English Commentary
The confrontation ends abruptly without a fight. The monkeys' instinct for self-preservation overrides their defensive duty. Seeing Lakshmana as Kala mrityu yugantabham (Death at the apocalypse), they realize they are outmatched. Panic sets in (bhayaparita angah - limbs seized with fear), and the organized guard dissolves into a rout. They scatter in all directions (vidruta dishah). This validates the earlier descriptions of Lakshmana as a force of nature; mere animals (monkeys) instinctively flee from the predator/disaster he represents.

लक्ष्मण का केवल रूप ही वानरों का मनोबल तोड़ने के लिए पर्याप्त था। जैसे ही उन्होंने लक्ष्मण की आँखों में साक्षात मृत्यु ('काल मृत्यु') को देखा, उनकी हिम्मत जवाब दे गई। 'क्षुब्धम्' (उत्तेजित) लक्ष्मण को देखकर उनके अंग भय से भर गए ('भयपरीत अंगाः')। उन्होंने हथियार फेंक दिए और 'विद्रुता दिशः' (दिशाओं में भाग गए)। यह लक्ष्मण के तेज (aura) का प्रभाव है। बिना एक भी बाण चलाए, उन्होंने पूरी वानर सेना को तितर-बितर कर दिया। यह सिद्ध करता है कि लक्ष्मण का व्यक्तित्व कितना प्रभावशाली है।
