Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य वाक्यम् यदि रुचिः क्रियताम् साधु वानरः ।
इति उक्त्वा शीघ्रम् आगच्छ वत्स वाक्यम् अरिन्दम ॥ ॥४-३१-३४॥
tasya vākyam yadi ruciḥ kriyatām sādhu vānaraḥ |
iti uktvā śīghram āgaccha vatsa vākyam arindama ॥4-31-34॥
Translation
(Lakshmana said) "O Vanara! If it pleases him to heed my words, then let it be done well. Having said this, O destroyer of foes, my child, return quickly."

(लक्ष्मण ने कहा) "हे वानर! यदि तुम्हें उनका (सुग्रीव का) वचन सुनना रुचिकर लगे (या यदि सुग्रीव को मेरी बात मानने में रुचि हो), तो ठीक है, ऐसा ही करो। हे अरिन्दम (शत्रुदमन) वत्स! यह कहकर शीघ्र वापस आओ।"
English Commentary
Lakshmana's tone here is laced with an ultimatum. The phrase yadi ruciḥ (if it pleases/if there is a desire) carries sarcasm—implying that complying with the message is the only option if Sugriva wishes to retain his kingdom and life. Lakshmana addresses Angada with both a warrior's title (Arindama - destroyer of foes) and an affectionate term (Vatsa - child). This distinction emphasizes that while Angada is a capable warrior, to Lakshmana, he is an innocent intermediary. Lakshmana urges a quick return, perhaps to protect Angada from being caught in the crossfire of the looming confrontation.

यहाँ लक्ष्मण का स्वर चेतावनी भरा है। 'यदि रुचिः' (यदि इच्छा हो) में गहरा व्यंग्य है—अर्थात् यदि सुग्रीव जीवित रहना चाहता है और अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करना चाहता है, तो उसे मेरी बात माननी चाहिए। लक्ष्मण अंगद को 'अरिन्दम' (शत्रुओं का दमन करने वाला) और 'वत्स' (बेटा) दोनों कहते हैं। यह दर्शाता है कि वे अंगद की वीरता और निष्ठा को पहचानते हैं और उसे इस संकट से अलग रखना चाहते हैं। लक्ष्मण चाहते हैं कि अंगद संदेश देकर तुरंत वापस आ जाएं ताकि वे सुग्रीव के संभावित क्रोध या मूर्खता का शिकार न बनें।
