स निद्रा मद संवीतो वानरो न विबुद्धवान् ।
बभूव मद मत्तः च मदनेन च मोहितः ॥ ॥४-३१-३८॥
sa nidrā mada saṃvīto vānaro na vibuddhavān |
babhūva mada mattaḥ ca madanena ca mohitaḥ ॥4-31-38॥
Translation
That monkey (Sugriva), enveloped in sleep and intoxication, did not wake up (fully comprehend). He was drunk with intoxication and deluded by lust.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह वानर (सुग्रीव) नींद और नशे से घिरा होने के कारण जाग नहीं सका (होश में नहीं आया)। वह शराब के नशे में चूर था और कामदेव (वासना) द्वारा मोहित था।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the nadir of Sugriva's state. He is gripped by a triad of distractions: nidrā (sleep), mada (intoxication), and madana (lust). Together, these have completely clouded his judgment. The phrase na vibuddhavān signifies that despite Angada's physical and verbal attempts, the King could not fully awaken or comprehend the reality. This profound negligence, where a ruler is rendered comatose by vice while his kingdom is threatened, validates the severity of Lakshmana's fury.

यह श्लोक सुग्रीव के पतन की पराकाष्ठा है। 'निद्रा' (नींद), 'मद' (नशा), और 'मदन' (कामवासना)—इन तीनों ने मिलकर राजा की बुद्धि को हर लिया है। अंगद द्वारा झकझोरने और संदेश देने के बाद भी 'न विबुद्धवान्' (नहीं जागा/नहीं समझा), यह स्थिति अत्यंत दयनीय और खतरनाक है। एक राजा का कर्तव्य विमुख होकर इस स्तर तक गिर जाना ही लक्ष्मण के क्रोध का असली कारण है।
