न हि वै त्वत् विधो लोके पापम् एवम् समाचरेत् ।
कोपम् आर्येण यो हन्ति स वीरः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥४-३१-६॥
na hi vai tvat vidho loke pāpam evam samācaret । kopam āryeṇa yo hanti sa vīraḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥ ॥4-31-6॥
Translation
Indeed, a person like you should not commit such a sin in this world. He who destroys his anger through rectitude/wisdom is a true Hero and the best among men.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम्हारे जैसा (विवेकी) व्यक्ति संसार में ऐसा पाप (मित्र वध) नहीं कर सकता। जो अपने विवेक (आर्य भाव) के द्वारा क्रोध को नष्ट कर देता है, वही वीर है और वही पुरुषोत्तम है।
English Commentary
Rama reframes the situation morally. He labels the potential killing of Sugriva as Papam (sin), despite the provocation. He appeals to Lakshmana's self-image ("someone like you"). The core teaching here is that true heroism isn't just martial prowess, but emotional conquest. To "kill anger" (kopam hanti) with noble wisdom (aryena) is the mark of a Purushottama. Rama is gently guiding Lakshmana back from the precipice of a rash decision, reminding him that impulsive violence is beneath his dignity.

राम लक्ष्मण को समझाते हैं कि सुग्रीव का वध करना 'पाप' होगा। यद्यपि सुग्रीव दोषी है, पर वह मित्र और शरणार्थी है। राम लक्ष्मण की प्रशंसा करते हुए कहते हैं 'त्वत् विधो' (तुम जैसा श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति)। राम वीरता की नई परिभाषा देते हैं—बाहरी शत्रु को मारना वीरता है, लेकिन आंतरिक शत्रु (क्रोध) को मारना उससे बड़ी वीरता है। 'आर्येण' का अर्थ है श्रेष्ठ बुद्धि या धर्म। राम लक्ष्मण को याद दिलाते हैं कि वे रघुकुल के राजकुमार हैं, कोई साधारण हत्यारे नहीं। यह श्लोक आत्म-संयम (self-control) का महामंत्र है।
