स च तान् अब्रवीत् वाक्यम् निश्चित्य गुरु लाघवम् ।
मंत्रज्ञान् मंत्र कुशलो मंत्रेषु परिनिष्ठितः ॥ ॥४-३२-२॥
Sa ca tān abravīt vākyam niścitya guru lāghavam । Mantrajñān mantra kuśalo mantreṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ ॥ ॥4-32-2॥
Translation
Skilled in counsel and established in the principles of diplomacy, Sugriva, having weighed the gravity and lightness of the situation, spoke these words to his ministers who were experts in counsel.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मंत्रणा (सलाह) में कुशल और मंत्रणा के तत्वों में निष्ठित सुग्रीव ने स्थिति के भारीपन और हल्केपन (बलाबल) का निश्चय करके, मंत्रणा जानने वाले उन मंत्रियों से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Sugriva's competence as a ruler (Rāja-nīti). The repetition of the root word for counsel (Mantra) emphasizes that this is a formal diplomatic proceeding, not a panic reaction. Guru-lāghavam refers to the weighing of pros and cons, or the severity versus the manageability of the crisis. Before facing Lakshmana, Sugriva ensures he has the consensus of his cabinet, validating his status as Mantra kuśalo (expert in counsel).

यह श्लोक सुग्रीव की राजनीतिक सूझबूझ को स्थापित करता है। सुग्रीव को 'मंत्रकुशल' कहा गया है। राजा का धर्म है कि संकट के समय अकेले निर्णय न ले। 'गुरु लाघवम्' (भारी और हल्का) का अर्थ है स्थिति के पक्ष-विपक्ष और लक्ष्मण के क्रोध के कारण व निवारण का तुलनात्मक अध्ययन करना। सुग्रीव नशे में होने के बाद भी राजधर्म का पालन करते हुए अपने विश्वासपात्रों से परामर्श करते हैं।
