अतो निमित्तम् त्रस्तो अहम् रामेण तु महात्मना ।
यन् मम उपकृतम् शक्यम् प्रतिकर्तुम् न तन् मया ॥४-३२-८॥
Ato nimittam trasto aham rāmeṇa tu mahātmanā । Yan mama upakṛtam śakyam pratikartum na tan mayā ॥ ॥4-32-8॥
Translation
For this very reason, I am terrified of the high-souled Rama. It is not possible for me to repay the favor he has bestowed upon me.

इसी कारण से मैं महात्मा राम से भयभीत हूँ। उन्होंने मुझ पर जो उपकार किया है, उसका बदला चुकाना (प्रत्युपकार करना) मेरे लिए संभव नहीं है।
English Commentary
Sugriva articulates the root of his fear: the asymmetry of his relationship with Rama. By stating that repayment is impossible, Sugriva elevates Rama’s deed (killing Vali) to a level that paralyzes him rather than motivating him. He feels intellectually and morally overwhelmed by the magnitude of Rama's help, leading to a complex called the "burden of gratitude." Instead of rushing to serve Rama, Sugriva has retreated into fear because he believes he can never truly equalize the ledger. He refers to Rama as Mahatmana (high-souled), acknowledging Rama's superiority, but this reverence is currently fueling his anxiety rather than his duty. It reveals a specific psychological state where an immense favor induces avoidance behavior in the recipient, as they fear falling short in their reciprocation. Sugriva sees his inability to repay not just as a failure of resources, but as a fundamental inadequacy in himself compared to Rama.

सुग्रीव यहाँ अपनी हीनभावना और कृतज्ञता के बोझ को व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। 'त्रस्तो अहम्' (मैं डरा हुआ हूँ) एक राजा के मुख से निकलना यह दर्शाता है कि राम का व्यक्तित्व और उनका कृत्य कितना विशाल है। सुग्रीव को लगता है कि राम ने बाली का वध करके और राज्य दिलाकर जो किया, वह अतुलनीय है। सुग्रीव का यह तर्क कि "मैं बदला नहीं चुका सकता" आंशिक रूप से उनके भय का कारण है, लेकिन यह उनके प्रमाद का बहाना भी बन रहा है। जब कोई व्यक्ति किसी के उपकार के नीचे बहुत अधिक दब जाता है, तो कभी-कभी वह सामने वाले का सामना करने से कतराने लगता है। सुग्रीव यहाँ यह भूल रहे हैं कि राम उनसे बराबरी का व्यवहार नहीं, बल्कि केवल सीता की खोज का प्रयास चाहते हैं। यह श्लोक एक ऋणी व्यक्ति की मानसिक स्थिति का सटीक चित्रण है जो अपने महाजन (लेनदार) से आँख मिलाने से डरता है।
