त्वत् दर्शने विशुद्ध आत्मा न स कोपम् करिष्यति ।
न हि स्त्रीषु महात्मानः क्वचित् कुर्वन्ति दारुणम् ॥४-३३-३६॥
tvat darśane viśuddha ātmā na sa kopam kariṣyati |
na hi strīṣu mahātmānaḥ kvacit kurvanti dāruṇam ॥4-33-36॥
Translation
Upon seeing you, that pure-souled one will not express anger; for great souls never direct harshness towards women.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम्हें देखते ही वे विशुद्ध आत्मा (लक्ष्मण) क्रोध नहीं करेंगे। क्योंकि महात्मा पुरुष कभी भी स्त्रियों के प्रति कठोर व्यवहार नहीं करते हैं।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the chivalric code of the time and Angada's psychological insight into Lakshmana. He refers to Lakshmana as 'vishuddha atma' (pure soul), confident that his nobility prevents him from directing aggression toward a woman. It highlights the distinction between a warrior's wrath against enemies and his conduct in civil society. Angada relies on the certainty that Lakshmana's adherence to Dharma makes him predictable in his decency; he will involuntarily soften his stance in the presence of a lady, providing the opening needed for negotiation.
