स त्वम् ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु सक्तो मिथ्या प्रतिश्रवः ।
न त्वाम् रामो विजानीते सर्पम् मण्डूक राविणम् ॥ ॥४-३४-१५॥
sa tvam grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu sakto mithyā pratiśravaḥ |
na tvām rāmo vijānīte sarpam maṇḍūka rāviṇam ॥4-34-15॥
Translation
You are addicted to vulgar pleasures and are a maker of false promises. Rama did not recognize you for what you are—a snake making the sound of a frog.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम ग्राम्य (तुच्छ) भोगों में आसक्त हो और झूठी प्रतिज्ञा करने वाले हो। राम तुम्हें पहचान नहीं पाए, जैसे कोई 'मेंढक की तरह बोलने वाले सांप' को नहीं पहचान पाता (और धोखे से मारा जाता है)।
English Commentary
Lakshmana employs a devastating metaphor here: "a snake making the sound of a frog." In nature, this refers to a predator disguising itself as prey to lure a victim. By applying this to Sugriva, Lakshmana accuses him of the ultimate treachery. He implies that Sugriva played the victim (the persecuted frog) to gain Rama's sympathy and help, but now that he has power, his true nature (the venomous snake) is revealed, and he is betraying his benefactor. This metaphor strips away any nobility from Sugriva’s actions. Furthermore, describing Sugriva's royal luxuries as grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu (vulgar/rustic pleasures) shows Lakshmana's utter disdain for the lifestyle that has made Sugriva forget his divine duty. It is an accusation of calculated deception.

यहाँ लक्ष्मण ने एक अत्यंत तीखी और अपमानजनक उपमा का प्रयोग किया है—'सर्पम् मण्डूक राविणम्'। जिस प्रकार एक सांप, शिकार को आकर्षित करने के लिए मेंढक की आवाज निकालता है और पास आने पर उसे डस लेता है, उसी प्रकार सुग्रीव ने राम के सामने एक दीन-हीन मित्र (मेंढक) का नाटक किया, लेकिन वास्तव में वह एक कपटी सांप निकला। लक्ष्मण का आरोप है कि सुग्रीव ने राम की सरलता का लाभ उठाया है। 'ग्राम्य भोग' शब्द का प्रयोग सुग्रीव के राजसी विलास को 'गंवार' या 'निम्न स्तर' का बताने के लिए किया गया है। यह श्लोक सुग्रीव के चरित्र पर सबसे बड़ा प्रहार है, जहाँ उसे सीधे तौर पर विश्वासघाती और ढोंगी कहा गया है। लक्ष्मण यह जता रहे हैं कि राम ने सुग्रीव पर भरोसा करके गलती की।
