न च संकुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः ।
समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीव मा वालि पथम् अन्वगाः ॥ ॥४-३४-१८॥
na ca saṃkucitaḥ panthā yena vālī hato gataḥ |
samaye tiṣṭha sugrīva mā vāli patham anvagāḥ ॥4-34-18॥
Translation
The path by which Vali was killed and departed has not become narrow (closed). O Sugriva, stand by your promise; do not follow the path of Vali.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिस रास्ते से बालि मारा गया और गया, वह रास्ता अभी बंद (संकुचित) नहीं हुआ है। हे सुग्रीव! अपनी प्रतिज्ञा (समय) पर स्थिर रहो, बालि के पथ का अनुसरण मत करो।
English Commentary
This is one of the most iconic verses in the Kishkindha Kanda. The metaphor "The path Vali took is not yet closed" is poetic yet terrifying. It implies that the road to death is wide enough for Sugriva to follow his brother if he isn't careful. It signifies that Rama’s ability to punish is not a one-time event; it is a standing capability. The command samaye tiṣṭha (stand by your covenant/promise) offers the only lifeline. Lakshmana presents a binary choice: honor the contract or face execution. This verse creates a powerful visual of the gates of the afterlife standing ajar, waiting for the next victim of arrogance and ingratitude.

यह रामायण के सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध और प्रभावशाली श्लोकों में से एक है। 'न च संकुचितः पन्था' (रास्ता संकरा/बंद नहीं हुआ है)—यह एक मुहावरेदार चेतावनी है। यमलोक का दरवाजा अभी भी खुला है। लक्ष्मण सुग्रीव को चेतावनी दे रहे हैं कि वह बालि के पीछे-पीछे उसी रास्ते पर न जाए। 'समये तिष्ठ' (अपनी मर्यादा/प्रतिज्ञा में रहो) ही एकमात्र बचाव का उपाय है। यह श्लोक सुग्रीव को यह चुनने का अवसर देता है: या तो 'समय' (प्रतिज्ञा) का पालन करो या 'बालि पथ' (मृत्यु) को चुनो। लक्ष्मण का क्रोध यहाँ चरम पर है, लेकिन इसमें मित्र को बचाने की एक अंतिम चेतावनी भी छिपी है।
