उत्पतंतम् अनूत्पेतू रुमा प्रभृतयः स्त्रियः ।
सुग्रीवम् गगने पूर्णम् चंद्रम् तारा गणा इव ॥ ॥४-३४-४॥
utpataṃtam anūtpetū rumā prabhṛtayaḥ striyaḥ |
sugrīvam gagane pūrṇam caṃdram tārā gaṇā iva ॥4-34-4॥
Translation
Following him as he rose, Ruma and the other women stood up, just as groups of stars appear in the sky alongside the full moon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सुग्रीव के उठते ही रुमा आदि स्त्रियाँ भी उनके पीछे वैसे ही उठ खड़ी हुईं, जैसे आकाश में पूर्ण चंद्रमा के उदय होने पर तारागण उदित हो जाते हैं।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a romantic simile here, comparing Sugriva surrounded by women to the full moon surrounded by stars. While aesthetically pleasing, this imagery serves to heighten the tension. The 'Full Moon' implies completion, satisfaction, and cool brightness—states of being that are utterly denied to Rama right now. Seeing Sugriva as the center of this celestial-like harem scene reinforces the accusation that he has been living in a different world, oblivious to the darkness of Rama's grief. The synchronization of the women rising with Sugriva shows his dominance in the harem, but to Lakshmana, it looks like a display of excessive indulgence.

यहाँ कवि ने पुनः एक सुंदर किन्तु विरोधाभासी उपमा का प्रयोग किया है। सुग्रीव और उनकी पत्नियों की तुलना 'चंद्रमा और तारागण' से की गई है। यह दृश्य अत्यंत मनोरम है—सुग्रीव (चंद्रमा) और स्त्रियाँ (तारे)। किन्तु, लक्ष्मण के दृष्टिकोण से यह दृश्य क्रोध को और भड़काने वाला है। जहाँ राम वियोग के अंधकार में हैं, वहाँ सुग्रीव का जीवन 'पूर्ण चंद्रमा' की भांति प्रकाशमान और उत्सवपूर्ण है। पत्नियों का सुग्रीव के साथ अनुगमन करना उनकी पति-भक्ति को दर्शाता है, लेकिन इस समय यह भीड़ लक्ष्मण को सुग्रीव की विषय-वासना का प्रमाण अधिक लग रही है।
