Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न एवम् लक्ष्मण वक्तव्यो न अयम् परुषम् अर्हति ।
हरीणाम् ईश्वरः श्रोतुम् तव वक्त्रात् विशेषतः ॥ ॥४-३५-२॥
na evam lakṣmaṇa vaktavyo na ayam paruṣam arhati |
harīṇām īśvaraḥ śrotum tava vaktrāt viśeṣataḥ ॥4-35-2॥
Translation
(Tara said) O Lakshmana, you should not speak in this way. He (Sugriva) does not deserve harsh words, especially hearing them from your mouth, as he is the Lord of Monkeys.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(तारा बोली) हे लक्ष्मण! आपको ऐसा नहीं कहना चाहिए। यह (सुग्रीव) कठोर वचनों के योग्य नहीं है, और विशेष रूप से आपके मुख से वानरराज (हरीणाम् ईश्वरः) ऐसे वचन सुनने के योग्य नहीं हैं।
English Commentary
Tara begins her defense with dignified reproof. She argues based on protocol and relationship. First, she asserts Sugriva's status as Harīṇām Īśvaraḥ (King of Monkeys), implying that regicide or royal insults are inappropriate. Second, she appeals to Lakshmana's own nobility ("especially from your mouth"). She suggests that such harshness (paruṣam) is beneath Lakshmana's dignity and violates the bond of friendship they share. By shifting the focus from Sugriva’s failure to Lakshmana’s breach of etiquette, she subtly puts Lakshmana on the defensive. It is a masterstroke of diplomacy: defending the guilty by questioning the propriety of the prosecutor.
