ततः कण्ठ गतम् माल्यम् चित्रम् बहु गुणम् महत् ।
चिच्छेद विमदः च आसीत् सुग्रीवो वानर ईश्वरः ॥ ॥४-३६-३॥
Tataḥ kaṇṭha gatam mālyam citram bahu guṇam mahat |
Ciccheda vimadaḥ ca āsīt Sugrīvo vānara īśvaraḥ ॥4-36-3॥
Translation
Then, Sugriva, the Lord of Monkeys, snapped the magnificent, colorful, and valuable garland around his neck and became sober (free from intoxication).

तदनन्तर वानरराज सुग्रीव ने अपने गले में पड़ी हुई विचित्र और बहुमूल्य विशाल माला को तोड़ दिया और उनका नशा (मद) भी उतर गया।
English Commentary
Snapping the garland is a powerful symbolic act. The garland represented his immersion in luxury, sensory pleasure, and intoxication. By breaking it physically, Sugriva psychologically snaps out of his stupor. The term Vimadah indicates he became sober—cleared of both wine and the arrogance of comfort. It marks his return to duty and alertness, acknowledging that the time for celebration has ended and the time for war has begun.

माला को तोड़ना एक प्रतीकात्मक कार्य है। वह माला उनके विलास और आनंद का प्रतीक थी। उसे तोड़कर सुग्रीव ने यह संकेत दिया कि 'विलास का समय समाप्त हुआ, अब कर्तव्य का समय है'। 'विमदः' का अर्थ है कि उनका नशा उतर गया—चाहे वह मदिरा का हो या सत्ता का। लक्ष्मण के आगमन ने उन्हें वास्तविकता के धरातल पर ला खड़ा किया और वे पुनः एक गंभीर राजा की भांति व्यवहार करने लगे।
